Avatar: The Way of Water, is the long-awaited sequel to the award-winning film from 2009.  The soundtrack for the new film was written by Simon Franglen, who originally wrote 5 hours of music to cover any and all situations in the almost 3-hour movie.  From Darkness to Light is a beautiful instrumental piece in the movie that shows off the beauty of the water.  On paper, the music seems a little too simple, but the chord progressions together with the moving parts make for quite a beautiful and memorable piece.  This arrangement is scored for flute choir – piccolo with 4 C, alto, bass, and contrabass flutes.  There is an optional cello part that doubles the contrabass that can be played by any bass clef C instrument in a similar range.  One of the most important parts of this piece is what helps create the mood, which is where the part called “Shimmer� comes in.  In an interview, Simon Franglen said that an important part of the music is the feeling of light, and he achieved that by including shimmering sounds into his tunes.  With that in mind, this is how the “Shimmer� part can be played:  Hang a few keys (house keys, car keys, etc.) that have different pitches on short lengths of string.  Use a small metal or wooden object to lightly hit the keys to create little “dings�.  Be creative with this percussive part!  You can use whistle tones, a little xylophone, wind chimes, etc.  The idea is to create a magical mood without overpowering the music.  Play this part wherever there is a note in the measure.  Duration: 3.75 minutes.

Inspiration Each of us, throughout our lives, are faced with choices where the path forward is unclear. Where the decision maybe a crossroad for our lives. Who can guide us? Who should we turn to? Jesus said I Am The Way? The Music A rousing church anthem that begins with the Tenor Soloist searching for answers. Presented with a difficult choice he asks Jesus what should I do now?, who will be my guide?. The choir responds with I Am The Way, offering the response in a polyphonic round, so to speak. Once completed, the opening melody returns sung by the choir followed by a repeat of the chorus. A C section is then introduced, in a minor key, reminding us to follow the Light as Darkness can deceive. The Tenor soloist returns with the opening melody, now with minimal accompaniment, giving a retrospective feeling to the music. The anthem closes with a repeat of the chorus followed by the Tenor soloist giving the piece a finality.

A study in long notes, this Baroque-style aria study was initially composed for tenor John Miles after he came to Brnau College for a concert in the late 1970's.  Either a tenor or a soprano could use this piece to work on their long notes - it goes to dramatic high Bb, and has a simple piano part.  It's a great recital piece.  The piece eventually became number 5 of my 6 aria studies for trumpet and piano, as well as the basis for a larger work for brass quintet and organ.

This intermediate/ advanced arrangement of Joy to the World intersperses original melody with the classic Christmas hymn.  It is meant to set the scene of a dark, anxious, and weary world desperate for the arrival of a Savior.  The original melody builds from sadness to hope, and at that moment the beautiful chords of Joy to the World begin, like the light of Christ's arrival breaking onto a dreary world.To me, Joy to the World perfectly reflects both the sentiments of Christ's birth AND His second coming - I wanted this arrangement to be relevant to people now.  So many of us are desperate for the saving, the peace, and the healing that only He can give.  The world feels dark and scary, represented by music mixed throughout the piece, but Christ's coming truly brings joy to the world - magnificent, majestic, and genuine joy.  It did then, it does now, and it will in the future.  This arrangement combines a sense of the world's darkness with the sense of Christ's triumph.  It is complex and majestic in parts, but sweet and simple in others.  And after a grandiose climax, the simple ending is meant to bring us back to where it all began - in the humble setting of a stable in Bethlehem.

The vocalist embodies four distinct characters - the narrator, a father, his young son, and the eponymous Erlking, a supernatural being in pursuit of the boy. The piano mirrors the implied scene of horse riding with rapid triplet figures, simulating hoof beats. Arranged in the key of D minor, this piano rendition features swift triplets and continuous motion, evoking a sense of urgency and darkness. It showcases rapid finger work in the right hand and scalic passages in the left hand. Commissioned by All Classical Portland radio network to mark the occasion of the total solar eclipse in 2017, Body of the Moon was first recorded by Erick Vallé (vocal solo), Nancy Ives (violoncello), and Chris Whyte (percussion) with Resonance Ensemble, directed by Katherine FitzGibbon.The piece was broadcast across the Pacific Northwest of the United States as millions experienced the totality of the solar eclipse. The phenomenon of the eclipse is represented by the lyrical cello line as the choir gives voice to the words of Galileo Galilei (1564- 1642): ‘Vedere il corpo della luna/Behold the body of the moon!’ The bass drum represents the vastness of our solar system, and a lone vocal improvisation speaks to the personal experience of this magical moment. Galileo’s other phrase, ‘we had perpetual twilight and never darkness’, is a poetic description of experiencing the eerie phenomenon of a total solar eclipse.
