Catalonia has a great tradition of Christmas carols, rather like Austria. They are secular songs in general, intended to be sung by anybody at any time during the Christmas period. According to the Catalan writer Joan Amades (1890-1959) these Christmas songs were sung by shepherds at the doors of the churches on Christmas Eve, some of the melodies date back to the 15th century. As their origin would suggest the lyrics can be very down to earth. Joseph and Mary (Josep i Maria) has an English lyric which, like the Song Of The Birds (Cant Dels Ocells), is not a direct translation though the central elements are the same as the Catalan original. This work is based on 4 melodies by Telemann but with many additional augmented-second twists, in Jewish music style, and various decorations. The original melodies are: Herr wie lange (Lord, how long) This is a canon for two voices based on the psalm text and forms the beginning and end of the work Herr, wie lange willst du mein so gar vergessen, wie lange verbirgest du dein Antlitz vor mir! Children of the wind, an English adaptation of Vindens barn, was commissioned by The Swedish Children’s and Youth’s Choir Association, UNGiKÖR, 2008. Composed for 2-parts children’s choir, soprano saxophone, piano and percussion.

Children of the wind was created to inspire a sense of freedom. To make you feel the wind in your hair, see the majesty of high mountains or the greatness of the oceans. To return to places where life can be simple and authentic.
Having grown up in the far north of Sweden, above the Arctic circle, living close to nature with long snowy winters and that very special Nordic light, this piece is inspired by the games that children play outdoors – catching snowflakes, playing hide-and-seek in harmony with the elements. Who can better speak the language of snowflakes and whisper secrets to the wind than the children of the earth? The children are our future, and every child should in his or her own environment have the right to explore this kind of freedom.
The song is also inspired by the Sami cultural expression known as Yoyk. – Susanna Lindmark.

When I first saw the enormous chair Rachel Gardner and Carlos Canul constructed for A Gift from the Bower, an outdoor, multi-disciplinary group exhibition conceived by renowned artists James Surls and Charmaine Locke, I had a vision of a cellist seated in a chair on the chair, performing solo in a bower deep in the woods of Splendora Gardens. I shared this image with Rachel, who didn’t think I was nuts, and over the course of several weeks, composed a piece for unaccompanied cello to be performed at the opening of the exhibit. I was honored when cellist Patrick Moore agreed to premiere the work; his formidable technique and the deep expression he brings to his playing inspired me to embrace the challenge of composing a solo for his instrument.

Knowing my piece would be performed outdoors, I was inspired to evoke the rhythm of sound events one hears in woods, especially the rise and fall of wind as it moves through branches and leaves. The very opening of the piece and later, what I hear as an extended coda, were created as moments for the cellist as much as for the listener and are performed in a sort of meditative state, calling to mind the age-old question, “If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?� The repeating measures of 16th notes in the piece’s demanding middle section pay tribute to two of my heroes, Terry Riley and Philip Glass. While composing the work, Bach’s Six Suites for Violoncello Solo was another important point of reference, as was double bassist Eberhard Weber's 1973 album, The Colours of Chloë.

Once finished, it made sense to name the piece A Gift from the Bower since the opportunity to compose the work was a gift, and in exchange, so is the music I have composed.

A Gift from the Bower premiered on April 22, 2023, by Patrick Moore at the Locke Surls Center for Art and Nature.

A revised version of this piece was completed on September 5, 2023.

This is the fourth in my series of Sermon Songs. On June 18, 2023, at First Presbyterian Church, Fort Myers, Florida, Rev. Roger Peterson used the text Acts 12 : 1-19 in an inspiring sermon - BELIEVING PRAYER. James had been killed, and Herod, grandson of Herod the Great, who had spoken to the Wise Men, put Peter in chains and had him heavily guarded so he could be executed after the Feast of the Unleavened Bread.  The early church prayed, and prayed for Peter, and an angel lead Peter out and he at first thought it was a dream. When he finally realized he was free, he knocked and knocked on doors until a faithful girl named Rhoda let him join in what  would be his long journey of spreading the Gospel. Herod, by the way had the guards killed, but when he acted like a god, God got him but good.
