This is an arrangement for Brass Band of my Flute Octet of the same name. It will need at least a 1st section band to handle the last movement. This might be a good piece to use in an entertainments contest. There is quite a bit for the percussion to do which took some doing as the original had none. The four movements represent my thoughts about Canada and its people. 1. March for the Frontiersmen: Canada has a lot of wilderness that has not been spoiled by man. This movement represents the rugged frontiersmen pushing through the Canadian forests. 2. The Great White Cold: I imagined the bitter freezing cold and icy beauty of Canadian winters (not that I have ever experienced such) and I used some slightly unusual techniques to create the impression of a cold wind blowing across the arctic scenery. 3. Campfire Songs: I had this vision of the great outdoors with Canadian families going camping in the mountainous regions sitting round their campfire at night and singing songs. I had no idea at the time whether Canadians were campfire songsters or what kinds of songs they might choose, so I selected a number of ’folk’ songs from the Great Canadian Tune Book and incorporated them into this movement. 4. The New Found Land: This movement moves to Canada’s eastern seaboard and I imagined new emigrants to the country arriving at a busy harbour and seeing all the hustle and bustle of a lively community and sea port. With some difficulty the debarkees find their land legs but then become absorbed in the lively new world to which they have moved.

These ‘Three Equali’ are amongst the few pieces that were written for trombone ensemble by a well- known composer, and therefor they are very important pieces for the trombone repertoire. This particular edition is different from the ones that most trombone players know. First of all, it contains a score for male choir. And secondly, it is transposed a major second down. The reason for this is that the original version is too high for the male voices. The version for male choir was added to the first and the last movement by Ignaz Seyfried, a friend of Beethoven. To make the words fit to the music, he had to be quite free with interpreting the rhythmical structure that Beethoven composed. It is debatable if the vocal and instrumental version should be performed all together or alternating with each other. According to the notes about Beethoven’s funeral (where the first and last movement were performed), the voices and instruments were alternating during this performance. The second movement was performed on a later moment, but the link between the instrumental version (with text by Frans Grillparzer) was not made. I have taken the freedom to put these two together in this score, and transposed it one major second down to make it fit smoothly in between the other two movements. The first and last movement also contained a text in Latin, but since the second movement was only available in German, I also used the German texts for the other movements.

Children of the Heavenly Father is a Christian hymn with lyrics by Lina Sandell, the daughter of a Lutheran minister. She was partially paralyzed at an early age and doctors believed she would never walk. When her parents returned from church one Sunday morning, they found her healed and walking freely. She published her first book of spiritual poetry when she was 16.

About the composer: Brenda Dillon is best known for her contributions to the Recreational Music Making Movement. She also presents group piano and RMM sessions throughout the U.S. As well as serving as a teacher trainer, she has written extensive articles on both group piano and RMM teaching. A suite for the intermediate player, that contains elements of classical, romantic and baroque genres. Tempos are recommended guidance only- they work at any number of tempos (except for the allegro in movement 2). Otherwise, play them as you feel them. Movement 1 is really a set of variations on the main theme in D minor. It explores a moderate range of keys and rhythms. Movement 2 starts with an adagio that can be played quite freely, ascending from Cmaj up thru various keys, leading to an allegro/presto dance-like piano theme in Dmaj. Much room for tempo/dynamics interpretation then ending with a brief restatement of the adagio theme in a new key, followed by a mad rush up the cello to a high, quiet E, with small sighs to end the piece. Movements 3, 4 and 5 would be good performance pieces for students (melodically solid with multiple harmonic shifts, moderate bowing and fingering challenges and engaging rhythms).

The King’s Trio is a feature for the bass trombone, and was written for prominent Vancouver trombonist Sharman King. The 1st movement opens with a majestic unison theme, as the four trombones announce the arrival of the King. Tea Dance begins with a bass trombone cadenza, and develops into a lyrical representation of an elegant afternoon occasion. The Castle portrays the inner workings of a Royal household, from the bustling to the regal. The trombonists encounter a brief yet playful free section before making their way to the grand finale.The King’s Trio allows the sonority of the bass trombone to be heard while combining elements from the classical, jazz, and 20th century music traditions.

Lever harp arrangement of this famous movement of Edvard Grieg's 'Peer Gynt Suite'.
Arranged in 2023 for Eve Walls, then a grade 2 level lever harp player, who doesn't mind a few lever changes in order to play the music she desires.

With just a little practice, these lever changes are doable for early level harp players as they relate directly to the well known melody played over them, with the hands operating close together, and the left hand part is left relatively free to make this possible. 

Covering multiple ranges of the instrument, and with some nice soundboard slaps and glissando effects, this arrangement is designed to let the harp shine.

Played with restrained excitement at the beginning and real gusto at the end, this can make a fun and exciting performance piece.
