This little suite for beginner string orchestra aims to put into practice as many of the different technical aspects of the ABRSM Grade 1 exam as possible, whilst remaining a fun piece to play! 

The cheerful first movement is in D major. There is some use of open string double stops and a chance for the 2nd violins to show off their left hand pizzicato, whilst the legato cello melody in the middle section explores the 1234 chromatic finger pattern.

The short second movement, which is really no more than a brief interlude, is in A major, and provides the opportunity to focus on controlling slurs and legato bowing. 4th fingers instead of open Es in the 1st violins are desirable but not compulsory!

Finally, the third Latin-inspired movement is a syncopation-filled exploration of the E minor natural scale. If you have some percussion instruments at hand please feel free to get creative and add them in wherever you like!

The piece can be played without double basses, but if there are none it might be an idea for one desk of cellos to cover the bass part in the first movement middle section.

3rd violins are only necessary if there are no violas, or if violas need an extra boost!

Blowin' in the Wind is a folk song by Bob Dylan, released on the 1963 studio album The Freewheelin'. The song is one of Bob Dylon's best-known pieces; parts of the melody come from the traditional gospel No More Auction Block.
The song became an anthem of the American civil rights and peace movements; Rolling Stone lists the piece at number 14 on the 500 best songs of all time.
The song was adapted for the Kalimba with 17 tines and notated using a simple tablature - no reading of classical music notation necessary! The tablature is explained in the appendix.
The arrangement is intended for one player. There is no distinction between ''melody'' and ''accompaniment'', the notation is played as a whole
The setting was created at a slow tempo with a clearly audible metronome - perfect for learning and practicing. We hope you enjoy making music...!

This work uses wordless-vocalize (singing on Ah, Oh or with the mouth closed, ad libitum). The vocal part is generally quite free, allowing the singer to express herself freely. The orchestration is for tymp/perc/vibra/hp/cel/harps/strings(minimum : 44222) Like a supple vine, the voice seems to unfold across the orchestra, with the warm expressive themes and shining strings, with the support of the harpsichord, the vibraphone and other percussion. Certainly, there is a coloristic note in the orchestral palette, but also a wish to combine the colors of the voice and the orchestra in different manners. Through this osmosis and through the tempo rubato suggested several times, by the absence of metronomic movements, the composer has tried to create music which breathes through freedom, suppleness and poetry, in the infinite spirals of beauty and love, outside of space and time.. The orchestral version of the work was recorded in 2014 with Isaure Equilez, mezzo-soprano and the National Polish Radio Orchestra under the direction of Paul Wehage The orchestral parts are available from the publisher on rental.

Yes, making music with others is one of the best things about being a violinist, and a string duo, trio or quartet is great for weddings and other private or corporate events.  But sometimes through constraints of availability / space / budget – or just for the thrill of it - we need to go it alone.  That’s when music for unaccompanied violin (not merely solo violin) comes into its own.

Here’s the slow movement from Vivaldi's Winter concerto, from The Four Seasons, with the bass line folded into the violin part.  I've recorded this with eighth notes, but think of them more as indications than full-length quavers, so you can take care of the upper line.  I've written in some ornamentation as well - but feel free to improvise, if you're that way inclined!
