It consists of a theme and eight variations, plus a grand finale. It was written in two forms, one for two pianos and the more well-known orchestral version.There is a musicological controversy as to whether the theme is actually from the pen of Haydn or another mystery composer. Some are now referring to it as the Saint Anthony Variations. Nevertheless, this 18-minute work by Brahms is a magnificent work of genius.Not to be outdone, Mr. Sauer has created his own masterpiece of this work, arranged for virtuoso artists of the Horn and Piano. They date to the sixth century, and have their origins in Old Testament titles for the coming Messiah. These settings, in English, of the O Antiphons were written for SCHOLA HYBERNIAE, an all-female ensemble specialising in Gregorian Chant and early polyphony. Of special interest to the group is music from early manuscripts associated with Irish saints. These short choral vignettes can be performed as a set, or as individual reflective pieces in liturgy throughout the season of Advent. When sung in concert setting, I envisage that the chant antiphon is sung before each choral presentation, and have incorporated references to chant, organum, and open harmony throughout.
