Taking Your Place offers a stirring way to mark the milestone of the bar or bat mitzvah. It's been added to Saturday morning Shabbat services at the historic Central Synagogue in New York -- not only because of it's simple beauty but because it communicates so clearly the significance of a child choosing to join the larger Jewish family. The Hebrew comes from the mishebeirach prayer-- the blessing for the child found in the Shabbat morning liturgy. The Hebrew blessing is one of the mishebeirach prayers for the Torah service found in any traditional siddur.

Composed by Max Bruch. Arranged by Marcus Martin. Jewish,Romantic Period,Sacred. 11 pages. Cornelius Edition (uk) #6703693. Published by Cornelius Edition (uk) (A0.805662).

German Composer Max Bruch (1838-1920) completed this work in 1880 whilst in Liverpool, England. It is dedicated to - and premiered by - Robert Hausmann, who had requested a cello piece from Bruch.

The work is styled as an ‘Adagio on 2 Hebrew Melodies’. The first theme, which gives the work its title, imitates the voice of the cantor who chants the liturgy during the evening service on every Yom Kippur. The second theme is derived from English composer Isaac Nathan’s arrangement of Byron’s O weep for Those that Wept on Babel’s Stream and is given a more Schumannesque treatment in the tonic major key.

Although originally scored for full orchestra, the work is frequently and effectively performed with piano accompaniment. The violin is ideally suited to the solo line and this makes an excellent recital piece.

Viola Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.805659

Composed by Max Bruch. Arranged by Marcus Martin. Concert,Jewish,Praise & Worship,Romantic Period,Spiritual. Individual part. 11 pages. Cornelius Edition (uk) #6702873. Published by Cornelius Edition (uk) (A0.805659).

This is Max Bruch's second most famous composition written for cello and orchestra in 1880. The first theme, which also lends the piece its title, comes from the Kol Nidre declaration, recited during the evening service on Yom Kippur. In Bruch's setting of the melody, the solo instrument imitates the rhapsodic voice of the cantor who chants the liturgy in the synagogue. The second subject of the piece is quoted from the middle section of Isaac Nathan's arrangement of O Weep for Those that Wept on Babel's Stream, a lyric which was penned by Lord Byron in his collection Hebrew Melodies.  This arrangement is faithful to the original and is ideally suited to the Viola as the solo instrument .
