FIRST IMPRESSIONS is an original composition for big band and featured as a set piece for the 2005 Australian Academy Festival of Music C Grade Jazz Ensemble division. Written in a laid-back swing style, it is a minor blues scored for full big band but will work equally well with a smaller combination of instruments as indicated on the front page of the score. The arrangement features plenty of unison writing to help younger players establish confidence within their sections as well as more independence between sections.  An open section provides a chance for everyone in the band to have a go at taking a solo.  Backing figures are provided on parts and can be played at the director's discretion. Solo sheets are also included for Bb, Eb and Treble and Bass clef instruments with two fully notated choruses. The market for such music is almost non-existent, so I re-arranged them for concert band.  The comic strips were all once in the Los Angeles times but for various reasons got pulled. Program notes and a condensed score are included. If printed front to back all parts should come out with correct page turns (which accounts for some of the shameless advertising and blank pages I included make sure this happens). Playing times are 3:27, 2:50, and 2:37 respectively.

It has become a jazz standard, recorded by Wes Montgomery and Stanley Turrentine among others.This arrangement is fairly lengthy (367 measures) running between 7:30 to 8:30 depending on tempo. Tempo should be in the range of 220-240 quarter note beats per minute. There are three extended solos as well as a brief drum solo.Instrumentation is the standard big band: five saxes (a,a,t,t,b), five trumpets (the 5th is optional), four trombones, guitar, piano, bass & drums.The first tenor has a 96 bar ad lib solo. First trombone gets 80 bars, and the piano gets three choruses (the first is unaccompanied). Drums have a 16 bar solo leading back to a D.C. al Coda.Brass parts only have occasional high notes, a couple of high D’s and E flats in the lead trumpet. The most challenging aspect of this arrangement is the quick tempo.

My jobs were on hiatus and I no longer had an artificial schedule to keep, so I drifted to the natural rhythm of life and began to rise and retire according to the sun. In the process I rediscovered the beauty of mornings. I wrote this song to describe all of the delights and meaning of morning. The piece begins with trills and brillante runs indicating the excitement of daybreak and the first glimpse of the crack of dawn. Then the twitters as the birds awaken. The B section portrays the stillness and calm of the earliest morning when nothing else is awake. C section shows the beauty of nature as it begins to be illuminated. The D section has more energy and movement as the world begins to come to life. E is a simple chorale to nature and from F the drama and intensity build to the actual sunrise. The style of the piece is Contemporary Classical with a fusion of New Age, Classical, and Romantic. This composition was chosen to be featured at the 2022 Symposium of Caribbean Art Music.
