The short piano introduction is meant to represent the approach of the Kings from a long distance. Measures 1 through 13 should be played as softly as possible, gradually increasing in volume from there until the voices begin. The text is a conversation between the Three Kings and the Star. The choice was made not to employ the use of soloists as each individual King and Star, but instead to keep the piece completely ensemble oriented. As a result, the composition relies on the ensemble to portray multiple unique voices.  Sections are marked accordingly and every effort should be made by singers and conductor to vary each respectively. .

Technically speaking they are rather comfortable to play; the musical material is transparent in most cases, sometimes calling for a prevailing “glassy� resonance in the high register, which is very typical for the composer. There are three movements that are inspired by Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve. It is especially appropriate during this 50th anniversary of the moon walk as the astronauts trained at this location. The first movement is called Violent Past. Much of this movement is built around the dissonant intervals of a half step and the tritone.These intervals are used both melodically and harmonically. The second movement is called Lunar Landscape and is more evocative rather than descriptive. It creates a feeling of vastness and openness.This movement is a tribute to the 50th anniversary of landing on the moon that is being celebrated at the same time that this movement was created. The Apollo 14 astronauts trained at Craters of the Moon in 1969 in order to learn more about volcanic geology. The movement is built around a walking passacaglia theme that is mainly in the left hand of the piano. After its initial statement, the passacaglia theme is accompanied by open 4ths and 5ths in the piano that later appear in the oboe and clarinet, and then in imitation between the piano and high winds. A more melodic variant of the passacaglia theme occurs in the bassoon over the original in the piano. All this material is developed before the opening material returns in the original key and tempo before eventually fading into the distance. Forces of Nature is the title of the third movement. There are five natural phenomena in the park that are represented musically, The Great Rift, Lava Flow, Vents, Cinder Cones, and Lava Tubes. Each of these have a motif that is descriptive and the motifs transform and combine as the movement progresses.

Where its name comes from is the unusual acoustic properties that one experiences when standing on top of that broken pavement. Those outside the circle can't hear what the person is saying, and when speaking, the person in the circle can hear their voice echoed back to them. Scientifically, it is said to be its unique position in relation to the nearby buildings of downtown, but even so, it has become a strange tourist attraction. To exemplify these strange acoustic properties, this big band piece is written in an unusual time signature for the blues: 5/4. That, in itself, makes it inherently difficult to play since most jazz musicians are tuned into 4/4 with the occasional 3/4 or 12/8 thrown in for variety. The idea for this arrangement was given to me by an old friend who played in BR Edge Hill band with when we were kids, Christine Humphreys and to do it for bass trombone, the more I looked at it thinking of Eric Burdon’s voice from The Animals with his first verse nearly too low for him to scrape the lower notes and then the later verses near to top of his register suited. The Animals though in A minor, so for BT I dropped it to Ab minor a real shall we say juicy register for bass trombone plus the added attraction of setting it in the lower octave pedal area to show the instrument off. There aren’t may Bass Trom solos in the rep, so now we add one more!An interview with Eric Burdon revealed that he first heard the song at a club in Newcastle, England, where it was performed by Northumberland folk singer Johnny Handle.The Animals were on tour with Chuck Berry and chose him because they wanted to sing something different. The Animals version moves the narrative from the initial point of view of a woman drawn into a life of decline to that of a man whose father is a gambler and a drunk, rather than the adorable person of the previous versions.
