The top line as written is intermediate, but there are a few optional “ossia� bars that make the line early intermediate. There’s also an optional bass line for conventional guitar or bass guitar and that’s supplied in treble and bass clefs. The bass line will suit a beginner, but the piece also works fine without it. There is an “improvisation� section in the middle with call and response lines to add interest for players and audience alike.In a large ensemble it works well to have both top parts plus bass and octave bass lines playing - it makes a massive wall of sound!This arrangement was a firm favourite with the Hampshire Guitar Orchestra (HAGO) and their audiences. Frenchman Charles Borel-Clerc wrote it originally in 1905 as a French cafe song, La Mattchiche, based on the Brazilian dance maxixa, predecessor to the samba, and in his subtitle he described it as a march based on Spanish themes. He repurposed it as a tune for a Spanish zarzuela (a little like an American musical play) and retitled it La Sorella, Italian for the sister. John Philip Sousa heard it when his band was on a European tour and recast it as a military-style American march. And this arrangement treats it as a tango, very Argentine. It has been suggested that the inspiration for the title could have stemmed from a painting depicting a snowy landscape. This was an extremely popular backdrop among Impressionist artist like Claude Monet or Alfred Sisley; the latter painted Snow at Louveciennes.No 12 Minstrels This is the final prelude of Book One.  Debussy delivers a surprising and humorous gem that is a tribute to the performing minstrel groups which started to appear in Europe around 1900. The music of the minstrels included many contemporary jazz elements such as ragtime and blues, rhythms which were incorporated into the music of quite a few fascinated European composers. This prelude cleverly captures the frenzy of the quick-change minstrel act and their rhythmic excitement, opening with a banjo-like theme supported by uncharacteristically blatant dominant to tonic pedals in G Major. We also hear a brief sentimental song and a recurrent drum theme before the prelude comes to a satisfying close with a hymn- like plagal cadence.
