Lullay, mine liking is a Middle English lyric poem or carol of the 15th century which frames a narrative describing an encounter of the Nativity with a song sung by the Virgin Mary to the infant Christ. The refrain is an early example of an English lullaby; the term lullaby is thought to originate with the lu lu or la la sound made by mothers or nurses to calm children, and by or bye bye, another lulling sound (for example in the similarly ancient Coventry Carol)There are a number of surviving medieval English verses associated with the birth of Jesus which take the form of a lullaby, of which this is probably the most famous example. An advanced piece for pedal harp, about 12 minutes long, with lots of melodies and a variety of styles and tempos. It's in western classical harmony and structured as a melodic journey. There are sections with delicate handiwork/hand-work and a little bit of glissandi and pres de la table effects. Three sections in the middle are more extensive, one involving exuberant melodies, another having a waltz-like character, and the central one partly inspired by Weber's Andante and Hungarian Rondo (which I performed on the viola). My goal was to make the piece feel like one great cohesive experience instead of just a lot of little sections, and hopefully you will agree. My other goal was to provide melodies which will delight music-lovers, and package them together in a meaningful way. The PDF also includes composer's notes of musical analysis and the process I went through in writing the piece.

In 1935, Germaine Tailleferre was asked to write the stage music for Jean Sarment's play Madame Quinze which was produced by the Comédie Française. The play was about Madame de Pompadour and Louis XV and also featured the Société de la Musique Ancienne (Henri Casadesus playing the viola d'amour, Marius Casadesus on the quinton, Régina Patorni-Casadesus playing the harpsichord, Lucette Casadesus at the viola de gamba, Maurice Devilliers at the bass viol). The production was reprised by the Comédie Française in 1950, this time at the Odéon theatre and Tailleferre revised her score at that time. This short piece for four viols in present in the 1935 manuscript at the Paris Opera Library. It was also performed during the 1950 reprise, according to materials located at the Library of the Comédie Française.

These journeys were referred to as Walz so these workers went auf der Walz. The idea of travelling auf der Walz was also taken up in Australia (where they called it on the Waltz or on the Wallaby) and it gave rise to the famous song Waltzing Matilda, although in the Ozzie song the traveller was a swagman rather than a craftsman. The main theme (letter C) is in the form of a popular French romance.
