The hymn was first associated with Freemasonry in Russia, but its popularity quickly grew. It became an unofficial national anthem until it was superseded by Lvov's “God save the Tsar.� Except during the Soviet period (1917–1991), Kol' slaven has been used in Russia at public gatherings and military ceremonies such as the christening of ships, lowering or raising of the flag, and at military funerals. Kol' slaven also became popular among émigré Russians and has been associated with Russian emigration in many countries. The singing of hymns with multiple verses in chorale style is not a part of Russian Orthodox worship. For this reason, Bortniansky's hymn is not considered liturgical in the Russian Church but is used mostly for secular ceremonies. The language of the hymn is Russian (although with several archaic words and word endings) rather than the language of Russian Orthodox worship, Church Slavonic. In Germany, the hymn is used not only in worship but also for military ceremonies and is occasionally sung as a prelude to the German national anthem. This delightful arrangement of the first movement of The Spring is perfect for any energetic moment, regardless of season.  Its charm comes from its quick tempo and dynamic contrasts, complete with the sounds of the spring season (perhaps add a bird whistle, rainstick, props, poem, or a nature slide show). The arrangement is for 4, 5, or 6 ringers using two or three octaves of handbells (or handchimes).  Complete assignments and performance notes are enclosed, and the piece is Level 3 when played with six ringers.  This piece may also be performed by four- or six-in-hand ensembles without tables.The piece is in rondeau form, which means that it has a recurring theme (similar to a refrain) and verses that extremely differ from one another.  Rondeau form is usually explained by letters, where A equals the recurring theme, and each other letter like B or C indicate completely differing verses.  The form then looks like this: ABACADAE etcetera. Because of its consistency, both audience and performers alike will look forward to the next time that the A theme appears. Performance time:• 3 minutes.

Rhapsody – Wind of the Sea By Brendan Reeves This piece, Rhapsody – Wind of the Sea, takes the listener on a melodic ride over the waves and winds of the ocean.  The piece is grounded in an E major 7th chord which, despite being a 7th chord, serves tonic function throughout the piece. The piece begins with several arpeggios in moderato, which are meant to symbolize rolling waves.  Much like waves, they are not in perfect time.  The piece is very felt and performed with passion rather than strict attention to meter.  Dynamic is the primary focus. The melody is presented three times in the beginning of the piece, after which the dream sequence begins.  The dream sequence is characterized by stanzas differentiated by dynamic marking.  This crescendos into the next section symbolizing the wind on the sea, beginning on Measure 53.  The transition is from a previously stable tonic E major 7th chord.  With the naturalization of the D, it becomes an E dominant 7th chord and becomes the V7 chord of A major (Secondary Dominant).  In an instant flourishing A lydian scale, the listener is taken into a new melodic world in A lydian. The piece then diminishes back down into the waves of the dream pattern at measure 70.  The piece finishes off tempo with one last final, symbolic, arpeggio; a calm after the tempest.
