The Wellerman sea shanty was a song written by New Zealand whalers about their trials in daily life. The lyrics talk about having to work hard and wait for provisions brought to them by the “Wellerman�, a ship coming from the Weller Brothers trading company. This arrangement for saxophone quartet is easily playable by middle and high school groups. In the concert key of Eb. This piece is lively and bouncy and should be played with mostly short eighth notes. Play out the accents and really make this piece pop. The optional repeat and drum parts just add to the fun.

Here is a description by composer Henry Wolking of his beautifully expressive new work for trombone quartet, Another Today.

Another Today for trombone quartet was composed in the spring of 2020. This will most certainly join a long list of other compositions written by homebound composers during the beginning of the worldwide pandemic. Another Today is a seven and a half minute single movement concert work with several contrasting sections. Though hard to categorize, it is lively, energetic, and highly expressive. I rate it at the medium-difficult level of difficulty. The ranges are moderate but are highly rhythmic. I feel it is one of the most expressive chamber brass works of my career.

An accompanied saxophone trio for altos and optional tenor. The piece begins in a lively fashion starting quietly and adding more parts as it crescendos up to the opening of the tune in full ensemble scoring. The chorus passes active melodic portions amongst the parts until it flairs up to a triumphal statement. After a modulation the theme is passed around in a hocket-like fashion and then explodes into a block set of harmonies adding more and more rhythmic movement. The concluding section uses multiple dynamic and rhythmic shifts to cause contrasts up to a resounding conclusion

Based upon Jorge Luis Borges' imaginary ancient Chinese encyclopaedia in which the animal kingdom is broken down into fourteen categories such as 'Frenzied creatures' and 'Those belonging to the Emperor', this quartet reflects on the bizarre imagery suggested by these headings. 'The first movement 'Stray dogs' tends, after the fashion of these creatures, suddenly to appear in unexpected places' (Gilbert).
