A selection of 44 Dance Consort pieces from publications dating from 1500 to 1620 in three, four or five part scores and fully chorded with lyrics

Renaissance Dance music provides some of the most simple yet satisfying pieces to play in ensemble on a wide range of instruments.  They are suitable for recorders, modern strings, woodwinds or brass, or where available, reproductions of 16th century instruments, such as crumhorns, viols or shawms to name but a few.

The 44 pieces that first  appeared in the publication Chording to the Dance Masters, are  presented in full score and with separate parts for each of the lines.  What is more, a number of the pieces have been re-edited to include their lyrics, should you wish to perform them vocally.  They represent some of the best known secular pieces of the Renaissance repertoire.

What makes this Wold Meridian edition of these pieces different  from others is that they have been created to make performing them as accessible as possible.  Chords have been provided so that the piece can be played with just the melody line and a simple accompaniment.  It also means that keyboard players or fretted strings can join in with ensembles, giving extra sparkle to performances.

Each piece can be heard in a video on YouTube with illustrations and historical background information.  Even more helpful for players who are less experienced in reading harmony lines, there is a YouTube video link featuring each part, where it is heard initially on its own with the chords, on repeats with the melody line added and finally together with all the parts in the whole ensemble.  If you have not had the pleasure of playing in consort with other people, you could not do better than start with these Wold Meridian editions.

An old French carol, Marche pour les Matelots by Marin Marais (1706), this tune is a favorite at Christmas and is popular with carolers. The words were written by Willia Morris (1860)

In a 16th century style, Masters in This Hall refers back to a simpler society when the poor, bringing news of Christ's birth to the Masters in this Hall was a warning to the proud.

This song explains raising up the poor and casting down the proud is also contained in the song of the Virgin Mary as in Luke 1:51. This carol describes a poor man who wished to draw his master's attention to the birth of Christ by telling how he had met shepherds travelling to Bethlehem. He joined them and saw the Christ child in his Mother Mary's arms. The chorus reveals how the birth of Christ has raised up the poor and cast down the proud.

This is the first book of its kind! What began as a fun activity for my trumpet students has turned into a wonderful resource to improve their trumpet playing. Trumpet Folk Fill in the Blank is a book of thirty folk songs and nursery rhymes. Each song is presented first in an easy key, like C, F or G. Then it is transposed to other keys and certain strategic notes are left out. Those notes are replaced by question marks. The students are to practice the first version of the song until they get the sound of the melody in their ears. After they master the first version, then they are ready to play the fill in the blank versions of the songs in other keys. We use a total of seven key signatures in this book, up to three flats and three sharps. Any student who knows their scales up to three flats and three sharps should have a lot of fun playing these fill in the blank songs. Benefits of playing the fill in the blank songs include ear training, finger technique, sight reading, phrasing and tone.

This collection of eight solos aims to capture the styles and vocabulary of 10 masters of jazz drumming, and present that material in an accessible way. Much of the music available for drum set solos is difficult and geared towards those with a good amount of experience. These solos can be played by students as early as their first year of study on the drumset. It will give them exposure to material grounded in the jazz tradition, while hopefully remaining playable and generating interest and inspiration to forge deeper into the jazz drumming tradition.

NASHTY is inspired by Lewis Nash, and his intro on Say Hello to Calypso from a Jim Hall record called Grand Slam.

ILADELPH is inspired by the classic vocabulary of Philly Joe Jones.

THE TWISTED BARON tries to capture the vamp-oriented solos and sonic variety of Joey Baron.

SOME TASTY STEW comes from the worlds of both Bill Stewart and Nasheet Waits, particularly Nasheet's intro on Kinda Dukish with Jason Moran.

THANK YOU MATT WILSON! is based on the melodic soloing of Matt Wilson, specifically on his own tune, Thank You Billy Higgins!.

BLAKEY’S TRY is inspired by the ferocious drumming of the great Art Blakey.
