Welcome to the PCU Series for classroom-based groups. This series focuses on learning by doing; there are many accomplished performers within our school classrooms throughout the world, but my years of experience has taught me that many of these students learn to play by rote â€“ literally be learning one note followed by another â€“ without gaining full understanding of how the pieces work musically and theoretically. Indeed, some of them can perform to a high standard using this method, but then really struggle with composition and general musical understanding later in their educational careers.

I equate this to learning to speak sentences in a foreign language without fully understanding what those sentences actually mean.

So who is this book for?

It is for music teachers to use with their students who are learning to create exam-level compositions within a school environment. It is ideal for courses such as the American High School Diploma, GCSE, BTEC, IGCSE, SCS, HKCEE, IB(MYP), SPM, GCEO, CCEF, HKCEE, VSSD, GES or ICSE.

It is designed to cater for almost any instrument due to the parts being provided in many different keys and clefs (including tab and bass tab). Drum parts are intentionally not provided as drummers still need to have a good understanding of non-percussive elements such as melody and harmony; I would suggest that they play a keyboard part for the purposes of learning about composition.

Derek Hasted writes I have made two arrangements of this lovely piece. This edition contains the more accessible arrangement - ideal for an intermediate duo or a student/teacher duo. Visit my website (below) to easily find the other version.

This fantastic piece was written as an integral part of the film 'While I Live', and such is the power and emotion in the music, it has achieved a recognition that has far outlasted the film.

My arrangement for two guitars captures all of the original, fiendishly difficult, piano composition, but uses the sweet tone of the guitar to add quality, rather than quantity, to the notes, creating a soundscape that works effectively and makes a wonderful concert piece lasting almost 4 minutes.

The centre section has a simpler accompaniment than the original to avoid an overly fussy and unsatisfactory sound. Elsewhere the accompaniment is less rhythmically busy than the original, yet the chords are retained.

There are two arrangements in this one edition...
Version 1 allocates the music to the players as if they were the left and right hands of the piano piece - ideal for a duo in which one player is technically stronger than the other (for example a student/teacher duet).
Version 2 swaps the roles around at the phrase boundaries and suits a well-matched duo.

The choice of which you play is yours...

The arpeggios are fingered because they generally only work well in one position. The melody, by contrast, is unfingered; it is chromatic and so there is no place on the neck where all the notes are accessible. Itâ€™s really a matter of personal choice where you change position and whether you prefer to stay high up the neck or venture down to get a brighter tone.

SUMMARY
Have you ever wondered what happens to balloons when they fly away? Floating, Falling, Flying depicts the odyssey of two balloons who find themselves suddenly and blissfully untethered. Â It presents a musical narrative of their unpredictable journey through the skies, back to earth, and, eventually, into the stratosphere.Â

The piece was commissioned by Music Teachers National Association for the 2022 National Conference. Â It is a trio for oboe, violin and piano written for students at the intermediate to advanced-intermediate level. Â Composed in three contiguous movements, it involves three characters â€“ the balloons (portrayed by the oboe and violin) and the wind (represented by the piano). Â

In the opening movement (Floating), the balloons escape their moorings and ascend into free space, floating playfully among the clouds with the help of a gentle wind. But, as in life, journeys are not always peaceful. Â The second movement (Falling) opens with a hint that something is not quite right. Â Undaunted, the balloons continue their carefree ascent amid the ominous signs of an approaching storm. Â The wind ultimately asserts its authority, pummeling the balloons back to earth. Â As they lie helplessly on the ground, they assess each otherâ€™s condition and make feeble attempts to relaunch. Â But, without wind, their situation seems hopeless. Â In the final movement (Flying), hope is restored as a quiet breeze lifts the intrepid pair back into the air. Â They resume their skyward adventure with renewed vigor and joy â€“ dancing through the clouds and, ultimately, out of sight.

Floating, Falling, Flying is an exciting and challenging piece for student concerts, recitals and Solo and Ensemble festivals.

Apart from numerous publications in the field of music education, the music teacher and composer Hermann Regner (1928-2008) contributed considerably to the brass repertoire, such as material for wind orchestra and wind band. Influenced by his studies with Carl Orff, he paid special attention to the fusion of instrumental education and contemporary music. A matter of particular concern for him was to write practical, easily playable new music for children, young people and amateur musicians - music that takes the technical competence of beginners into account and motivates them to concern themselves with new sounds, rhythms and playing techniques. 'All begins well' is a small collection of easy pieces for trombone with piano accompaniment. The five short pieces are a perfect addition to instrument lessons and 'Jugend musiziert'. The pieces are very melodic, using simple keys (F major, B flat major, E flat major) which are easy to play by the trombone, and they cover a compass from B flat to E flat1.

Set in Heaven, Broken Doll tells the story of a group of recently deceased young women looking down on a teenage girl who is contemplating suicide. They are not told why and the role of the group is to persuade the girl's Spirit, to return to its host. There are a wide range of characters within the piece and although they all have one thing in common, (they are all female), their outlooks and life experiences are naturally all very different and each has an opinion on the cause of the young girl's demeanour and to come up with with a proposition on how to save the girlâ€™s life.
This is presented through the music and dialogue. Vocally the cast will have different capabilities and timbres.
This diversity of styles in characters and the memorable musical content should appeal to teenagers as well as family members.
The stage set is very basic, making the overall cost much lower, allowing it to be performed anywhere with a suitable space. It also has the potential to be filmed and the subsequent DVD could then be made available to anyone working with young people. All the necessary advice, information and useful contacts, should be provided in the programme notes.
