P�k Sarzamīn is the national anthem of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and formerly that of the Dominion of Pakistan. The music was composed by Ahmad Chagla in 1949, having been selected from hundreds of other melodies. Two years later, lyrics in classical Urdu were written by the Pakistani poet Hafeez Jalandhari. Musically, it's a blend of Eastern and Westrn musical traditions and sometimes referred to by its first line Pak sarzamin shad bad (Blessed be the Sacred Land). This quick and easy national anthem flexible arrangement is essential for traveling musicians, bands, instrumental groups and both amateur and professional ensembles. You can play it with any virtually any combination of instruments: symphonic band, clarinet choir, brass ensemble, brass band, solos, duets and trios - almost anything! This arrangement is in five independent parts each transposed into a variety of keys. For the most satisfying sound you’ll need to get a good balance between each part possibly with an emphasis on the melodic line. If you have a non-standard ensemble, you can pick 'n' mix as required. Piece includes multiple distinct and unique themes and developments before concluding. 6 page arrangement is challenging but not overly so, and well worth the effort to learn. Deeply funky tune draws from inspiration in Hezekiah Walker, Chick Corea, Ricky Dillard, Charlie Parker, and Theolonious Monk. It was used for a piano and drum prelude in church, for a moment in time. It was lots of fun to play.

The Long Black Veil is a country ballad written in 1959 by songwriters Danny Dill (1924-2008) and The Den Mother of Music Row, Marijohn Wilkin (1920-2006).  It’s been covered by a plethora of artists from Johnny Cash to Mick Jagger (accompanied by The Chieftains), but arguably the most well-known version was recorded by country music legend Lefty Frizzell.  It was selected by the Library of Congress in 2019 for preservation in the National Recording Registry for its cultural, historical, and aesthetic significance.  Frizzell’s version moves at the shuffling clip-clop of a horse’s hooves-as is the style of his genre-but I wanted to turn it into something that soars a bit more; something that frames the faceless, mourning woman standing in a bracing wind.

We first published the complete Introduction, Theme and Variations for Euphonium in 1991 and performed it on a 1830s ophicleide and a 1840s square piano in 1993. This edition comes with a shortened introduction,theme and variations. Duration around 8 ½ min. Solo part in treble and bass clef.Message from Sean Brennan:This arrangement, or more correctly transcription, was first published by us in 1991, although its origins go back much further than that. I do remember being transfixed in the 1970s by Richard Stoltzman’s recording of the original form of the work for clarinet and orchestra. I was convinced it would work for Euphonium and that one day there would be players with the technique, and above all musicality, to bring it off. For me, this vision came true in 1994 when we first performed the piece in Birmingham in 2004, and then again 10 years later when David Thornton and the Black Dyke Band recorded the Theme and Variations. Rossini composed the Introduction, Theme and Variations for clarinet and orchestra in 1810 at the request of a fellow student at the Conservatorio di Bologna. Although the autograph score has been lost, and some musicologists have questioned the authenticity of the work, I find no reason for doubt since Rossini recycled some of the material in later works, and apart from that his evervascent musical personality is abundant from beginning to end.

Grim (A0.939392). Another Place is a marimba quartet on two instruments with some accessory items like a mounted bass drum, cymbal, and wind chimes. The work is about 10.5 minutes long, and holds three distinct movements that begin with solemn rolls that slowly become more regimented and rhythmic. The second movement raises the bar and becomes very rhythmic and syncopated with a Reich-like approach of melody vs interlocking harmony. This climax brings a high dynamic level to the forefront of the instruments with interlocking impact points being contrasted to unison hits. The third movement takes this original melody and harmony to the next level by using changing time signatures and motivic ideas to maximize the powerful ending. Throughout there is a deep sense of color and texture that can be maximized by the ensemble in new and exciting ways with each performance. This has plenty of ink, but also leaves a lot to interpret and bring the ensemble’s voice forward. I hope you enjoy! This work won the Audience Award in the Rocky Mountain Music Composition Contest in 2022 as well as Second Prize overall. These international awards were judged by a panel of seven judges from around the world, but with the competition based out of Toronto, Canada.
