Our civilization once used to believe in depth and reading and art; now abstract thought is changing into a simplistic, superficial society where one is consumed with the quick Starbucks or Twitter fix. It's all lightness of being today. We don't celebrate anticipation anymore, people don't want to put the time in. This symphony is about the collapse of that whole ethos. The phrase in the lyrics that says 'kill the philharmonic' doesn't mean that literally. It's a metaphor for a society that has no use for the philharmonic. We're losing these things. Pretty soon John Coltrane and Miles Davis, along with all jazz and classic music, will become museum pieces. We used to have a culture that cherished these, but in a super simplistic society, there's just no room for them. This is one of the last songs that Freddie Mercury recorded before he died, and he wrote it whilst looking out at Lake Geneva, where Queen had a recording studio. He knew he didn't have long left, but his reflections in this song aren't melancholy - he writes of the things he can see out of his window, the beauty of the world, the fun that kids are having outside, and the simple joys of winter. The arrangement has some tricky rhythms, as it aims to stay pretty close to what Freddie sang. Aim for a conversational feel, with some freedom in the delivery, and it will become easier than mathematically working out all the cross-rhythms. Enjoy the big fall-offs - they're really fun!

Thank you for your interest in this advanced piano solo piece I composed during the first year of the COVID-19 Pandemic. I found a sense of hope and optimism from performing this light waltz, despite that the vaccine was still many months away at that point and things were looking grim.The waltz is written pretty much in an Intro-A-B-A'-Coda form. While the tempo is listed as “Moderately,” do not play it too quickly. There are some elements of B-flat Lydian interspersed.Regarding articulation: I use tenuto and accent + tenuto marks frequently in my compositions. I tend to use them mostly as indications for the melody and/or notes that should be emphasized or brought out. I never intend the accent + tenuto to be harsh, but it should be stronger than the tenuto alone.This is the first of eight waltzes for piano I composed between September 2020 and April 2024. I intend to have a collection of all eight available for sale in addition to individual pieces. The available recording on Arrange Me and Sheet Music Plus is an export from Finale – not a live performance.  I hope you enjoy playing this piece!  Gerald Gabbard.
