Syncopation and interchange between the parts bring musical sparkle to express lightness of spirits. The tag returns to the original tempo and feel, revealing the joy to be a vision rather than reality, but one which provides hope: we’ll find it some day. Satellite to Planet Nine is a saxophone quartet inspired by the cosmos surrounding planet Earth. The opening movement, Takeoff, is about the mystery and fear surrounding a possibility of another planet - or black hole - yet to be discovered and the beginning of the journey to find it. The second movement, Hymn for the Moon is dedicated to the closest body of natural rock in our solar system. This movement features the tenor saxophone using a mix of disjunct melodies, smooth jazz, and thick chords to produce a movement of both mysticism and peace as the rocket travels by it. Soca for Saturn is the following movement and is inspired by the Trinidadian popular music known as soca. It is the spark of joy and pure energy that holds the astronauts together as they hold their hopes high traveling to a land that might not even exist at all. The fourth movement depicts the first amount of struggle for the team, Solar Flares, which batter and beat at the crew as they try to find a way through. In the movement the mood is instantly changed with the realization that it is too calm, and soon, meet the purest form of heat and energy. Movement five continues the struggle, but this time with hasty success. Arrival continues where the fourth movement leaves off, but finally they see something in the distance – the planet they have been looking for. They prepare for landing, but with their equipment being nearly destroyed from the solar flares it is not smooth landing. In the final movement, New Gravity, the team ventures out into the new world, which is dark and barren. They feel a disturbing presence around them, and as they search further and further into the cold and dusty landscape, they realize what they are up against – survival. Using what they know, they build on their wreckage and create a new home - The Satellite to Planet Nine.

A really fun arrangement across the whole choir.

Players get to musically explore the mountains, the desert, volcanoes, time travel to ancient times, and fight in battle! Volume I of the suite represents three main characters from the sci-fi, fantasy book Trials of the Innermost (release date May 26, 2023). Each movement has a distinct feel and reflects each character's personality. This edition features performance notes written by the composer, including musical elements unique to each movement, fun facts, and personal influences JohnWillard had in mind when creating the work. A graphic of the musical cryptogram system used to make the melodies for each character is featured at the end of the notes. The three movements imitate a sonata, with the overall order of the suite is slow, slow, fast. Some teaching elements in the first movement I. Vayriel: Protector of the Mountains, include: scalar passages (A natural minor scale), shifting hands position, rolled chords, repeated left hand patterns, ornaments, and pedaling. II. Zinvar: Peacemaker of the Volcanic Rifts is more challenging, but has more room for musicality, expression, exploring different touches on the piano, and ethereal use of pedaling, like the sostenuto pedal (if you have one!) The movement opens with a mysterious, wave-like arpeggiated left hand pattern, similar to pieces of Chopin or Rachmaninoff. The B section is practice in using the sostenuto (middle) pedal while playing softly, imitating Gregorian Chant. Best of all the ending sounds harder than it actually is and you get to play as loud as possible! III. Idrilia: Warrior of the Desert is fast paced, rhythmic, and inspired by video games. This piece is a nice supplement for students learning techniques found in toccatas, nocturnes, and pieces that require a big, full sound. The longest and most advanced movement, players can enjoy using all the things: pedaling, accents, quick changes in dynamic contrast, and a lyrical B section. Technique requires comfort with arpeggios, chord inversions, octaves, and sensitivity to voicing. Once mastered, this movement can be both fun to play as a stand-alone recital piece or an exciting treat to play for friends and family. You'll find yourself humming the simple melody as it transforms throughout the work, and the ending is a chance to play big chords by using the full range of the keyboard.

It can really be considered as a solo feature for the first trumpet, with accompaniment provided by the other three. Aside from some of the rhythmic demands of the melody, there are no major range or technique challenges in any of the four parts for players of an intermediate skill level. For texture, Flugelhorns or Euphoniums could be used for a gentler ballad tonality. Additionally, this entire arrangement conforms to the original artist’s recording in Key and Form. If desired, this chart could be used along with a pianist or a rhythm section if desired to fill things out a bit further. A great addition to a Brass quartet book for easy listening background music or for a ballad on a pops concert set!
