Brass Quintet Baritone Horn TC,Bass Trombone,Cornet,Euphonium,Flugelhorn,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1321540

Composed by Pietro Mascagni. Arranged by Rob Bushnell. Classical,Easter,Film/TV,Opera,Romantic Period. 18 pages. RBMusic #910007. Published by RBMusic (A0.1321540).

In 1889, a struggling composer called Pietro Mascagni heard about a sponsored competition for one-act operas, specifically for young Italian composers who had not yet had an opera performed, only two months before the deadline. With little time, he selected the subject for his opera and asked his childhood friend, Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti (who was helped by Guido Menasci), to write a libretto for him. Mascagni selected a story that he had seen as a play in Milan in early 1884 by realist writer Giovanni Verga, “Rustic Chivalryâ€, or Cavalleria rusticana. A passionate love tragedy featuring seduction, adultery, revenge and murder, it is surprising set on Easter morning.

Mascagni received only a few verses at a time from his librettists, but he was not worried because he had the opera clear in his mind: “I identified with the drama to such an extent that I felt it within myself in terms of music.†After two months’ of work, the music for Cavalleria rusticana was finished but he feared the opera would fail and put the music in a draw. Fortunately, his wife sent it off, he unanimously won the competition and was soon the talk of Europe. (At the premiere in May 1890 in Rome, Mascagni received no fewer than 60 curtain calls.) Unfortunately, it was a one-hit wonder with Mascagni unable to repeat its success, saying towards the end of his life that “it is a pity I wrote Cavalleria first for I was crowned before I became king.†He died, penniless, in 1945.

Today, few people have heard of Mascagni’s name, and, if they have, it is rarely in relation to anything but one piece from Cavalleria rusticana, the Intermezzo. A short piece of purely orchestral music that is uses to denote the passage of time, the orchestration is very simple but it is such an indulgently beautiful melody (based on a hymn heard earlier in the short opera) that perfectly captures the peace of country living in Sicily against the intense feelings of the main characters and the looming tragedy to come.

The piece is so popular that (along with the “Easter Hymn†from the same opera), it is the only reason Mascagni features in the Classic FM’s Hall of Fame.

The piece was used in the 1980 film Raging Bull and the 1990 film The Godfather Part III.

This arrangement includes alternative parts for tenor horn, treble-clef trombone/euphonium and tuba. A recording of the original song can be found on YouTube:

Composed by Stuart Brown. Concert,Contemporary. Score. 12 pages. Stuart Brown Music #2859967. Published by Stuart Brown Music (A0.835450).

This is not your typical nocturne. This is night as it really is for many people: a time of restlessness, of anxiety, in which you lie awake or even feel the need to get out of the house for a while. This music is for all of those nights when you wonder what on earth is happening to the world around you, when you feel troubled by the contradictions between you and the world, when you dread the morning news of the results of an election or referendum; when you just want to shout at the world, I'm out of here ... imagine a night in which you need to step outside to gather your thoughts. You feel the chill of the night air as you stand gazing up at the sky. As clouds move above, you turn over in your mind the things that are troubling you. Gradually you begin to see more clearly the difference between the things you cannot change and those that you can; and with that realisation comes serenity and finally you are able to sleep.

The composer, who is a passionate believer in unity rather than division, wrote this music three days after Britain's 2016 referendum on its continued membership of the European Union, reflecting his feelings about the outcome. This is, therefore, as deeply personal a piece of music as you'll get. Include it in a program and it will help to put the rest of the program into perspective.

The music itself demonstrates that nonatonic and octatonic modes of limited transposition can be used to create melodies and harmonic progressions that combine tension with great beauty. At notated tempi the work lasts just under ten minutes. It is of advanced intermediate difficulty, the main challenges for the player being the complex modality and the shifting rhythms. The sound file provided here is the composer's own live performance, recorded on Saturday, September 10th, 2016. It is possibly appropriate for high school performance: students who are interested are welcome to get in touch with the composer via www.facebook.com/StuartBrownComposer/

By Gabriel Lagos. By Gabriel Lagos. Arranged by Gabriel Lagos. 19th Century,Classical,March,Romantic Period. Score. 5 pages. Lagos Music #847828. Published by Lagos Music (A0.1254257).

The third movement is done! Plenty of crunchy diminished and augmented fifth intervals in this work to give it some darkness. I also chose to keep the register fairly low. The feeling I'm trying to capture: despair; knowing that everyone's fate is to fade into the wind and there's nothing anyone can do about it. There's nothing wrong with that; I've come to a place where I no longer fear death, but it's a reality of life that, at times, is impossible to ignore. There is a positive side, though. For one, the contrasting section is in A flat major and picks up tempo briefly! Before inevitably falling back into F minor... Also, on a funny note, the entire main theme is based off of an old song I wrote for my high school rock band (in like, 2004-ish?), using a commonly used chord progression: I, VI, iv, V7. This was when I was first learning to write music but I remember always thinking it would sound good as a funeral march. The song was called One More Life and the lyrics were about shedding the old, beginning anew, asking the universe for one more life. It feels good to finally have written this movement, though. I hope you enjoy it :)

Thank you,

Gabe.

Spiritual Adaptation to Higher Altitudes (2018) (score & parts) is a beautiful work. Bursts of excitement and moments of dialogue punctuate the long, seamless phrases, inviting the musicians to explore the remarkably rich palette of colors created by this pairing. William Neil has created a truly unique, much-needed addition to the clarinet and percussion repertoire!- Dr. Corey Mackey

Program Notes
I was introduced to rock climbing by chance years ago, allured by the solo adventure of the climb, the management of ropes and the feel of the rock under my feet and fingers. Then, there was the fear of heights that could take your breath away when you were exposed to the vast openness below you and the feeling that you were really not supposed to be this high off the ground. And when the wind blows and you watch an eagle or hawk drift by, perfectly comfortable souring at these heights, you realize the importance of mind control in making your ascent. Over the years, I have gained more mental discipline while climbing and my spirit has been strengthened by the visual experience of these broad and deep horizons.   The poet Diana Syder said it well in her poem The Mountaineer: From this height it’s safe to scan the earth for bigger things. The climbs of life are its meaning. WN   Information on the composer:  www.williamneil.net   Audio Sample:  Corey Mackey, Clarinet, Keith Lienert, Vibraphone

By Damien Gauci. By Damien Gauci. 19th Century,Ragtime. Score. 6 pages. Damien Gauci #1006906. Published by Damien Gauci (A0.1426090).

This is one of my better piano compositions, I really did enjoy experimenting with different themes and ideas. I wrote this piece in about a week for a composition challenge in r/musictheory. The style of the composition is a Rag which is an early 20th century genre of music usually for piano that paved the way for blues and jazz. It features syncopated rhythms, colourful harmonies, usually a cheerful tone, and an “oompah” left hand pattern. It was really quite interesting writing in this style and I think it would be good to try it again.

When I started writing this piece, I came up with the main theme of the piece first and then wrote the rest of the piece and at the end, I actually added the introduction. As for the other sections of the piece, it was difficult to come up with something that fits the same theme and style but also make it different so that it is interesting for the listener. My favourite section is probably the last one with the descending chromatic scales. I think there is a good build up and release of tension at the end of the piece as well.
