Duration: 10 minutes, 16 pp. Description: In speaking of his recitation of his Four Quartets on phonograph, T. S. Eliot says: A recording of a poem by its author is no more definitive an 'interpretation' than a recording of a symphony conducted by the composer. The poem, if it is of any depth and complexity, will have meanings in it concealed from the author; and should be capable of being read in many ways, and with a variety of emotional emphasis.... Another reader, reciting the poem, need not feel bound to reproduce these rhythms: but, if he has studied the author's version, he can assure himself that he is departing from it deliberately, and not from ignorance. The composer could not have stated his intentions towards this piece better than to quote T. S. Eliot. No note or inflection is fixed in stone that it cannot be negotiated, changed to better suit the needs of the performer. This is especially true of the first movement which is composed around sections of the first of Eliot's Four Quartets (Burnt Norton), but applies generally to the whole piece. Much of the notation in this piece is meant to be suggestive. The performer may take a highly faithful approach to realizing the score, or consider the movements as models for directed improvisation. Movement 2, for example, asks the performer to continue to improvise in like manner, yet maps out a clear design for the music. Birthday Suit is dedicated to Robert S. Howe, a friend and obstetrician who welcomes into this world many people in their birthday suits. That is the most obvious reason for the title of this piece. A reason more germane to the music itself is the piece's reliance on the performer's own natural body rhythms (such as speech rhythms, involuntary eye movements, and rate of breathing) to help organize the flow of the music. In this way both metabolism and the written note cooperate to make music. There are three movements, Rhythm of Speech - Rhythm of Sight - Rhythm of Breath. Total 10 minutes. Its historic premiere at Pacifica Radio (KPFA) in Berkeley on 4 October, 1991 to inaugurate their new facility is included in Nicolas Slonimsky's book Music Since 1900. BYZANTINE HYMN: TI IPERMAHO (To the defender army leader) 
arranged for SATB choir and piano
During a siege of Constantinople in the 6th cent., and while the regular army was engaged in fighting elsewhere, the city was attacked by Avars. The women, children and seniors left there fought as best they could, but finally realized that they had to give up. As a last resort, they carried the icon of Panayia (St. Mary, always referred to as all-holy in Greek), alongside the city walls, something that produced an unexpected effect: The besiegers left! For three days the citizens participated in liturgies addressed to Her, in a hymn called AKATHISTOS YMNOS (=Non-sitting Hymn), where this tropation is central, as it is most actively still used in the Greek Orthodox Church at many other relevant services. The first part is the original, in unison, or sung by a soloist. The piano part and the following choir arrangement are my contribution.

This is an alto sax feature ballad. The melody is full and rich and could make you think of Johnny Hodges. First bridge is alto 1 & 2 in unison...with solo alto out front and alto 2 in section it gets a nice echo effect--Last 8 back to alto 1 solo. First half of second chorus has a band within a band over background. Solo part has a few notes past an eighth.
Last bridge trombones then alto solo last 8. Ending is very dramatic with some interesting alto work..the very last note is held over the band....like Harlem Nocturne. Not too fast.
Don’t let the last note scare you, look at your fingering chart or play it 8va lower.

I get really excited when music can carry multiple contradictory meanings, and spend a lot of time thinking about how I can mess with my audience by making things sound familiar but wrong. When I saw the Rachel, Jack, and Ashley Too episode of Black Mirror, I recognized the melody of the oddly upbeat pop song Ashley O was singing but couldn't quite place it because unconsciously I knew something was really off, and then slowly it dawned on me that it was a NIN cover, and I flipped out with utter joy that someone had just done something to me that I'm constantly trying to do to them. Every time the song played throughout the episode, I couldn't stop laughing, not just at the lyrics, but especially at a certain trite & upbeat sounding bassline and all of the different musical elements that completely changed the feel of the original. So of course I needed to write my own arrangement of that arrangement. I hope you enjoy it.

This a very real Latin in the style of Perez Perado. It is in mambo style and like all Latin it must have a claves player
full time or is is not Latin. It is not difficult but requires good intonation and a drummer that plays the correct rhythm--not the usual heavy on 3 rock.

Elements of this music can be traced to jazz, blues and classical music, but it’s not really crossover or fusion. It doesn’t sound like jazzy classical music and it certainly isn’t jazz hoping to be serious or grandiose. Its seemingly disparate impulses blend logically into a work that feels natural on its own terms. So when the saxophone plays syncopated melodies or bent pitches, it just sounds like the right thing to do. Similarly, though the inspiration for certain guitar sounds and effects came from electric-based fusion or more serious-minded rock music, those influences are probably not obvious. Of course, guitarists will bring some of their own concepts and experience into their sounds, too, but general guidelines are given on the score.

Three jazz inflected pop pieces for beginning to intermediate players. Rockin' Downtown: This piece harks back to early jazz rock. Don't swing the rhythm - play them straight. Play the opening statement aggressively, a bit brash. The middle section should be a little more playful. Give the closing two bars some 'shake' in the tone if you can. The Real And Only Blues: This should be played sweet and mournful, with a gentle swing to the rhythms. Treat each line as if it were a sentence, maybe even write words to go with it so that you have something to say with each phrase. Cart Full Of Monkeys: This is whimsical pop, unpredictable, like monkey behaviour. Don't be a complete slave to the tied rhythms in the opening and closing musical statements - use them more as a starting point for playfulness.
