Feed the Birds is a song written by the Sherman Brothers (Richard M. Sherman & Robert B. Sherman) and featured in the 1964 motion picture Mary Poppins. The song speaks of an old beggar woman (the Bird Woman) who sits on the steps of St Paul's Cathedral, selling bags of breadcrumbs to passers-by for two pence a bag (equivalent to about 13p in 2022) so that they can feed the many pigeons which surround the old woman. The scene is reminiscent of the real-life seed vendors of Trafalgar Square who began selling birdseed to passers-by shortly after its public opening in 1844.

SKU: A0.511073

Composed by Sean Michael O'Boyle and Terry Gilkyson. Arranged by Micaiah Bennett. Broadway,Children,Classical,Contemporary,Film/TV,Musical/Show. Score and parts. 39 pages. Micaiah Bennett #3052679. Published by Micaiah Bennett (A0.511073).

This song was originally written by Terry Gilkyson, for Walt Disney's The Jungle Book. This was also Walt Disney's last movie he was alive to supervise. Terry was also commissioned by Disney to do the music for this movie, but the directors, producers, and Walt himself did not like the 'darkness' of the music, and took him off of The Jungle Book project and hired the Sherman brothers to redo the music for the movie. However, the directing crew liked this song, The Bare Necessities so much that they decided to keep this song as part of the movie.
This song is a fun, bouncy song and on a level that will be playable by most, from high school level, to more advanced chamber groups. The majority of the songs original melody and phrasing has been retained, but a twist has been added to make it more enjoyable for both the players and the listeners of this arrangement.

By New Christy Minstrels. By Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman. Arranged by Timothy Stapay. Broadway,Film/TV,Musical/Show,Pop,Singer/Songwriter,Standards. Score. 2 pages. Timothy Stapay #841772. Published by Timothy Stapay (A0.1247227).

This is an arrangement of Chim Chim Cher-ee from the Walt Disney movie, Mary Poppins.

Chim Chim Cher-ee is a song from Mary Poppins, the 1964 musical motion picture, and also is featured in the 2004 Mary Poppins musical.

The song won the 1964 Academy Award for Best Original Song. In 2005, Julie Andrews included this song as part of Julie Andrews Selects Her Favorite Disney Songs.  The song was written by Robert B. Sherman & Richard M. Sherman (the Sherman Brothers) who also won an Oscar and a Grammy Award for Mary Poppins' song score.

The song was inspired by one of the drawings of a chimney sweep created by Mary Poppins' screenwriter, Don DaGradi. When asked about the drawing by the Sherman Brothers, DaGradi explained the ancient British folklore attributed to sweeps and how shaking hands with one or touching their sleeve could bring a person good luck.  In their 1961 treatment, the Sherman Brothers had already amalgamated many of the P.L. Travers characters in the creation of Bert. His theme music became Chim Chim Cher-ee.

Lyrics:

Chim chiminey
Chim chiminey
Chim chim cher-ee
A sweep is as lucky
As lucky can be

Chim chiminey
Chim chiminey
Chim chim cher-oo
Good luck will rub off when
I shakes 'ands with you
Or blow me a kiss
And that's lucky too

Now as the ladder of life
'As been strung
You may think a sweep's
On the bottommost rung

Though I spends me time
In the ashes and smoke
In this 'ole wide world
There's no 'appier bloke

Chim chiminey
Chim chiminey
Chim chim cher-ee
A sweep is as lucky
As lucky can be

Chim chiminey
Chim chiminey
Chim chim cher-oo
Good luck will rub off when
I shakes 'ands with you

Chim chiminey
Chim chiminey
Chim chim cher-ee
A sweep is as lucky
As lucky can be

Chim chiminey
Chim chiminey
Chim chim cher-oo
Good luck will rub off when
I shakes 'ands with you

I choose me bristles with pride
Yes, I do
A broom for the shaft
And a brush for the flume

Up where the smoke is
All billered and curled
'Tween pavement and stars
Is the chimney sweep world

When the's 'ardly no day
Nor 'ardly no night
There's things 'alf in shadow
And 'alf way in light
On the roof tops of London
Coo, what a sight

Chim chiminey
Chim chiminey
Chim chim cher-ee
When you're with a sweep
You're in glad company

No where is there
A more 'appier crew

Than them wot sings
Chim chim cher-ee
Chim cher-oo
Chim chim cher-ee
Chim chim cher-ee chim cher-oo.

SKU: A0.1509331

Composed by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman. Arranged by John Langley (Studio Orchestrations). Broadway,Children,Christmas,Film/TV,Musical/Show,Standards. 88 pages. Www.studio-orchestrations.com #1084580. Published by www.studio-orchestrations.com (A0.1509331).

For vocal soloist, (Optional SATB chorus) and Orchestra in G Major

Brothers Richard Sherman and Robert Sherman were two of the finest song writers of all time, creating iconic family friendly songs and scores for many Disney films including Mary Poppins (1964), Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968), and Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971) and the animated films The Sword in the Stone (1963), The Jungle Book (1967), Charlotte's Web (1973), The Aristocats (1970), and of course the theme park songs There's A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow and It's A Small World (After All).

The score for Mary Poppins is especially perfect with so many immortal songs like Chim chimeney, Spoonful of sugar, Fly a kite, Supercali ........ and of course the simple but beautiful Feed the birds.  It has such finely balanced musicality as a song and tugs the heart strings with its gentle lilting narrative of the unassuming bird lady on the steps of St. Paul's Cathedral.

This arrangement tries to capture the magic of the original song, using some occasional harmonic ideas from the stage musical version as well.

Instrumentation:
2 Flutes
Oboe
Cor Anglais
2 Clarinets
2 Bassoons
4 Horns

2 Percussion
Harp
Keyboard
Strings

Optional SATB chorus
