Besides the history of bands 180 years ago having no music and those within arranged popular tunes of the day and great classic symphonic works (often truncated), not al lots has changed apart from the fantastic influx of composed works for band over the last 60+ years, there’s also been a steady influx of orchestral works form the 1980’s as the technical facility of players has grown beyond belief, for EG. My old mentor and teacher Howard Snell working with Desford and other bands into the 90’s started to arrange orchestral works that A. Were fantastic works of musical caliber (many unknown the the BB rep) and, B. A superb challenge to the band - Daphnis and Chole Suite No 2 Ravel and Pines of Rome Respighi to name just two. In the same vein I have recently released Romeo & Juliet Tchaikovsky recently premiered in London by The Fulham Band, and today I let fly again one of the best known musical works in the world yet so far either not arranged because of over all length and technical difficulty, or just too harder work for the arranger? Katydids create a loud, raspy, three-pulsed song by rubbing their front wings together.  They sing to each other in the trees at night, with a continuous ka-ty-did.Dance of the Katydids begins by imitating their sound, using the gourd with scratcher.  After the intro, one katydid starts the dance, and more and more join in.  The katydids(the gourd) continue to the end of the dance.  The composer hopes this piece won't bug anybody!All parts are written within the range of young elementary grade musicians.  To produce a full sound, many instruments double other instruments, i.e. Eb sax and French horn, low brass and tenor sax, flute and oboe.  Should you have any questions, feel free to contact the composer at ronflintjer@gmail.com.

Published by Abigail Gilson (A0.1024939). Finding the Star is a slow-moving piece that draws out the idea of time being slowed down when one is lost. The theme of this piece is the idea of being lost at sea. The slow ground bass starts, the churning of the dark waves against the side of the ship. The sky and sea are the same type of dark, not a star or light can be seen anywhere above or below. On deck the crew wait for an order, though they are scared, there’s nothing they can do. They cannot make the star appear, and they cannot give direction without certainty that they’re going in the right direction. The waves turn and grow and often push the ship around, making everyone nervous, if they completely get turned they could get lost. The voices of the instruments trade places and come in and out of each other. Dancing around each other making a beautiful eerie melody. At the very end of the piece, the star is found. The clouds move and the moons bright light shines down on the weary travelers and they find hope again.
