Brass Quintet Bass Trombone,Horn,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1472617 Composed by Bill Conti. Arranged by Mary Clark. Classical,Film/TV. 11 pages. Second Wind Music #1050268. Published by Second Wind Music (A0.1472617). “Philadelphia Morning” is a powerfully expressive composition that sets the tone for a scene early in the movie Rocky when the main character has just found out the he will get to fight the world champion boxer and sets out for a training run in the gritty city streets of Philadelphia at 4 a.m. on a dark, cold, dreary winter day. (click here to see a clip of this scene from the movie) This beautifully written piece is penetrating and pensive in describing the battle within, the solitude of it, the impossibility at hand, and generally, the struggle involved in pushing oneself. There is a powerful but subtle orchestration here; the sound of a kind of musical undertow — an undertow that is pulling our hero down, as if giving him leaden legs, or of running in quicksand. But there is also a twinkle of possibility.  At the end, the [music] trails off and there is uncertainty in the air.” [From:  Jack Doyle, “Philadelphia Morning: 1976-1977,” PopHistoryDig.com, March 25, 2015.]This brass quintet arrangement of Philadelphia Morning would work well as a short concert piece that showcases the expressive qualities of the French horn as well as that of the whole ensemble. This piece has a quiet, pensive, somewhat moody tempermanent. While this arrangement is not technically challenging (other than the range for the horn part noted below), the lean scoring and soft dynamics requires the ensemble to pay close attention to balance and play as one in style, tone quality, and expressiveness.  Phrases passing from one player to another need to flow as if being played on a piano.  The expressive opening eight-bar horn solo, which is a direct transcription from the movie score, is mostly unaccompanied and ranges up to a high b-flat so a strong, confident horn player is needed – but they will surely enjoy playing this elegantly written passage.  (The film soundtrack recording features Vincent DeRosa on horn.)    The bass trombone part can be played on a tuba.

Oboe Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.881259 Composed by Gary Powell Nash. Contemporary. Individual part. 13 pages. Gary Powell Nash #5985465. Published by Gary Powell Nash (A0.881259). Nine New York City Miniatures (2020) oboe solo began with Movement 7,  A Million Numbered Streets.  A Million Numbered Streets was originally conceived for a Vox Novus Composers Voice 15 Minutes of Fame call for scores for a one minute oboe solo piece, specifically themed from New York City, New York.  In preparation, Nash discovered nearly 1,000 songs dedicated to NYC. Many of those were titled after numbered streets, hence Nash’s title A Million Numbered Streets. Nash’s creation employs a medium-fast highly syncopated song-like melody, alluding to a restless and busy NYC street. In an attempt to make A Million Numbered Streets more marketable, Nash decided to compose 8 additional miniatures around it.  The 8 complementary miniatures are all approximately 1 minute in length and alternating fast tempo and slow tempo movements.  There are no direct quotes from other songs; however, 3 of the movements are derived from and inspired by New York City related songs.  Movement #4, Downtown Music was inspired by the song Downtown by Tony Hatch (made popular by Petula Clark’s vocals).  Movement #8, Success is based on the song New York, New York by John Kander (best known for Frank Sinatra singing it).  The title Success was inspired by the phrase If I can make it there, I’ll make it anywhere.  Movement #9, Uptown Music is derived from the song Uptown Girl by Billy Joel. In addition, the title Spreading the News for movement 1, as well as that for movement 6, Vagabond Shoes are also phrases from the song New York, New York.

Piano Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1086225 By Idalmo Santos. By Francisca Gonzaga (Chiquinha Gonzaga 1847-1935). Arranged by Idalmo Santos. Latin,Pop. Score. 4 pages. Idalmo Santos #690420. Published by Idalmo Santos (A0.1086225). Chiquinha Gonzaga's first composition, in 1877, born out of improvisation in a choro circle at the home of composer Henrique Alves de Mesquita, the polka received the name Atraente (attractive) for dragging the instruments present. It was a resounding success (15 editions in 1877) and projected the name of Chiquinha Gonzaga to fame - at first uncomfortable - in the patriarchal society of the Second Reign. The sudden popularity of the author was seen as a provocation by her family, who began to destroy the sheet music sold on the streets by slave boys. It became a classic of Brazilian instrumental music and became part of the great choro repertoire. It was published in 1932 as No. 11 of the 2nd series of Alma Brasileira, choros for flute. Atraente was recorded by musicians such as Antonio Adolfo, Altamiro Carrilho, Benedito Lacerda, Clara Sverner, Eudóxia de Barros, Henrique Cazes, Leandro Braga, Marcus Viana, Maria Teresa Madeira, Muraro, Paulo Moura, Pixinguinha, Rosária Gatti, Talitha Peres, Turíbio Santos, in addition to orchestras and bands. At the end of the 1970s, Hermínio Bello de Carvalho wrote the lyrics, in records made by Leci Brandão, Olívia Hime and Edison Cordeiro.
