Composed by Stanley M Hoffman. Arranged by Stanley M Hoffman. 21st Century,Classical,Patriotic. 136 pages. Stanleymhoffman.com #1044317. Published by stanleymhoffman.com (A0.1465707).

Based on one of only several poems written by my mother, Jewish Holocaust survivor Rita Hoffman of blessed memory (1927–2018), Only from Blood Does Freedom Grow echoes the words of Hatikvah (The Hope), the national anthem of Israel. I have to believe that she wrote this poem around 1948 because of how it is worded.

I of course knew the source of inspiration for this poem when I reread it not long ago—something I had not done since the 1990s—but its having been inspired by Hatikvah was really driven home to me by a Facebook comment. That comment inspired me to compose a piece in which the opening and closing sections are based on the opening melody of Hatikvah, but in which the middle section is newly composed.

“Israel was not created in order to disappear - Israel will endure and flourish. It is the child of hope and the home of the brave. It can neither be broken by adversity nor demoralized by success. It carries the shield of democracy, and it honors the sword of freedom.”
—John F. Kennedy

Only from Blood Does Freedom Grow

For so many years a voice sounded in Jewish hearts saying,
“We want to have a home, we want to have a life again.”
Enough blood has already streamed through rivers,
the blood shed by our brothers *[and sisters],
they, who for freedom of strangers and nation died.
Now, the dream we dreamt for a long time has been awakened in us.
We want to ?ght for our state, our country.
The moment that we have been waiting for and been praying for
two thousand years has brought us a spark of hope.
We must not despair, for we are nevertheless Jews.
We must and must want to persevere.
A time will come which itself will become a symbol of our tragedy,
and which will remain forever in our hearts -
a burning ?ame, and a joyful feast.

Composer’s Notes

            In my parents' library there was an assortment of very old books that I used to leaf through while home for holidays.  One of these, The Ladies' Wreath, was of special interest.  The inscription inside the front cover read To Miss Sophia Venable by her friend William M. Duphuy, April 25, 1850.  Within the collection of romantic short stories and poems was The Poet's Pen from the Greek didactic poet Menecrates.  Here was something very different from the overly sentimental offerings in most of the volume.  I imagined the solitary lady reading this would feel most exhilarated and even empowered.  Ideas for setting the poem came almost immediately, with the oboe as a key figure.  Having experimented with a choral setting, I settled on tenor, oboe and piano and in 1989 the piece was completed.  I revised The Poet’s Pen in 2016.

The Poet's Pen

I was a useless reed; no cluster hung

My brow with purple grapes; no blossom flung

The coronet of crimson on my stem;

No apple blushed upon me, nor (the gem

of flowers) the violet strewed the yellow heath

Around my feet; nor jessamine's sweet wreath

Robed me in silver: day and night I pined

On the lone moor, and shivered in the wind.

At length a poet found me.  From my side

He smoothed the pale and withered leaves, and dyed

My lips in Helicon.  From that high hour,

I spoke! my words were flame and living power!

All the wide wonders of the earth were mine;

Far as the surges roll, or sunbeams's shine;

Deep as earth's bosom hides the emerald;

High as the hills with thunder-clouds are palled;

And there was sweetness round me, that the dew

Had never wet so sweet on violets blue.

To me the mighty scepter was a wand;

The roar of nations pealed at my command.

To me the dungeon, sword, and scourge were vain,

I smote the smiter, and I broke the chain;

Or, towering o'er them all, without a plume

I pierced the purple air, the tempest's gloom,

Till blazed th'Olympian glories on my eye,

Stars, temples, thrones and gods--infinity.

Composed by Traditional/Anonymous. Arranged by Socrates Arvanitakis. Classical,Early Music,Folk,Traditional. Individual part. 44 pages. Socrates Arvanitakis #765624. Published by Socrates Arvanitakis (A0.1165267).

This is the thirtieth-first of an extensive collection of folk songs arranged for the classical guitar mostly in two-part counterpoint. The arrangements are of moderate difficulty and the aims of this publication are to familiarise, entertain and educate guitarists (and other musicians) with a melodic repertoire of lasting aesthetic value, under the light of contrapuntal treatment. The thirty five volumes of this collection can certainly be printed on paper if so desired and there are a few pages in each volume, either blank or with photographs of various musicians, which can be inserted at will in any place for the correct ordering of left and right hand pages so that page turns can be avoided. The principle of avoiding page turns has been maintained in all  volumes, but this edition is also designed with mobile electronic devices in mind such as tablets etc, using the environment and facilities of a score reading application, towards a paperless world, at least in music. Therefore the size of the staves is bigger than usual for ease of reading on a small screen but not big enough to exceed the limit of a two-page view.
Active internal links for navigating from thematic indexes to particular songs and back to indexes have been added, and also external internet links to sites that give further information for the 945 songs of this first collection for classical guitar.
