Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1075446

By The Texas Voices. By Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Tom Council. 20th Century. Octavo. 14 pages. Tom Council #679627. Published by Tom Council (A0.1075446).

This was written for a concert by The Texas Voices entitled “The Joy of Food” (Alan Dyer, Director, Jim Loeffler, Accompanist). This was also an opportunity for the audience to donate food for a local pantry. When I thought about what I could contribute to this concert, the same song kept coming into my head. After hearing this song, you will hear bits and pieces from Theodorakas (Zorba the Greek), Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi. For the use, misuse of this wonderful music, I seek forgiveness.

La ciudad sumergida (The Submerged City) for four-part treble chorus and nature soundtrack by Adrienne Inglis (ASCAP)

Commissioned for Dr. Ramona M. Wis and the North Central College Women’s Chorale

A setting of an excerpt of Río de La Plata en lluvia from Mascarilla y Trébol (1938) by Alfonsina Storni (1938)

Copyright © 2020 Adrienne Inglis

Founder, composer, and singer with Inversion Ensemble of Austin, Texas, Adrienne Inglis also serves as principal flute with the Central Texas Philharmonic, flute instructor at Southwestern University, and flutist with flute/harp duo Chaski. She has music degrees from Lewis and Clark College and the University of Texas at Austin. An avid birder and environmentalist, she lives in the rural hill country of Central Texas.

Poet Alfonsina Storni began writing during a tumultuous childhood fraught with economic hardships, many disruptive moves, and an alcoholic father. She danced with a theatrical troupe and then became a teacher and journalist. She bore a child out of wedlock and found herself working as a single mother during socially oppressive times. In Buenos Aires she joined the emerging world of women’s rights, becoming an important literary voice in the movement. When her breast cancer returned, her lifelong passion for the sea culminated in her suicide off of the coast of Argentina.

Río de La Plata en lluvia from Mascarilla y Trébol (1938) lines 1-4 by Alfonsina Storni in the public domain

Ya casi el cielo te apretaba, ciego,

y sumergida una ciudad tenĂas

en tu cuerpo de grises heliotropos

neblivelado en su copĂłn de llanto.

[The sky was about to embrace you, blind, and you had in your body of gray heliotropes a submerged city,

with the misty sky like a chalice about to overflow with tears.]

Program note: Commissioned for Dr. Ramona M. Wis and the North Central College Women’s Chorale of Naperville, Illinois, La ciudad sumergida (The Submerged City) by Adrienne Inglis for four-part treble chorus with nature soundtrack captures the mood of a river, a city, the cloudy sky, and the poet’s own profound melancholy. The sound of rain creates both the ambiance of a misty day on the river and the sensation of cathartic crying from great sadness and pain. The city’s reflection on the river’s surface gives the illusion that the city is submerged in the water. The reflection of the clouds hovering low over Río de La Plata looks like gray heliotrope flowers. The apocalyptic images of a submerged city and of tears overflowing from the chalice-sky eerily foreshadow rising sea levels due to anthropogenic global warming.

The nature soundtrack of rain was recorded by the composer in the hill country of central Texas, July 2020.

Performance note: This aleatoric, asynchronous composition is suitable for remote singing along with the video score and nature soundtrack. Observe the order of entrances, but know that it’s not meant to line up exactly. Finish a phrase even if another phrase has started. Diphthongs move immediately to the second vowel sound. Ya begins with the [dʒ] sound and llanto begins with the [ʒ] sound, both typical of the Buenos Aires accent. Sing quite expressively except for the neblivelado section which is misty and veiled. The director may wish to indicate the rehearsals numbers or the singers may follow the time on the video-or both.

Duration: 3:08

Link to video with soundtrack is available from the composer (http://adrienneinglis.com).

Acknowledgements: The composer warmly thanks Pablo and Diana Donatti, Ángeles Rodríguez Cadena, and Emilio Torres for their contributions to this project and to Dr. Ramona M. Wis and the North Central College Women’s Chorale for the generous commission.

A gripping and dramatic telling of the USS Thresher disaster in 1963!
Ideal for a Memorial Day or Veterans Day concert

The Other Side
for SSSAA voices and vibraphone/percussion

In memory of John “Jack” Penfield Inglis (1942-1963)
Composed for VAMP Vocals’ “Between the Worlds” concert September 2023

Music by Adrienne Inglis (ASCAP)

Text adapted from essays by Robert Penfield Inglis (1913-2007) and used with permission from Jack’s family, and communications with the USS Thresher
Duration — about 5-7 minutes
Difficulty 4 (Auditioned chorus)

In memory of John “Jack” Penfield Inglis (1942-1963), who died in the USS Thresher disaster the day after his 21st birthday.
Performances:
8-9 Sep 2023 at 7 PM VAMP Vocals’ Between the Worlds concert, KMFA 89.5 Studios 41 Navasota Street Austin, TX 78702 Austin, Texas (https://www.vampvocals.com/)

Dedicated to the memory of my first cousin, Jack Inglis, The Other Side is scored for treble voices and vibraphone/percussion. It grapples with the unimaginable tragedy of losing a child, the serious concerns about the fitness of the USS Thresher to leave dock for sea trials, the catastrophic implosion of the submarine that killed all 129 aboard, and the communications between Jack and his parents after the Thresher sank. I composed this piece for the five extraordinary voices of VAMP Vocals for their September 2023 concert “Between the Worlds.” The treble voices tell the story and react to the narrative over evocative vibraphone harmonies. In the middle section, the percussionist bangs loudly on metal to sound like submarine pipes, structure, and hull breaking. The loss of the USS Thresher (SSN-593) spurred the Navy to institute the very successful Submarine Safety Program (SUBSAFE). The composer encourages performers to take dramatic license to enhance the emotional impact of the tragedy and the parents’ response.

Recording and video will be available soon.

Composed by Edward Fitzhugh. Arranged by Todd Marchand. Christian,Lent,Sacred. Octavo. 4 pages. Con Spirito Music #811946. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1215082).

O dulcis Virgo Mater (O sweet Virgin mother) is a petition to Mary, the mother of Jesus, that we might know her pain as witness to the passion of her son and thereby understand his pain, his sacrifice, and his love for us.

Especially fitting for Holy Week, the text by Rev. Fr. Edward Fitzhugh, an Anglican priest in the Episcopal Diocese of Fort Worth, Texas (ACNA) pleads:

O dulcis Virgo Mater, Maria sanctissima: Adiuva nos ad dolorem tuum sentire. (O sweet Virgin Mother, Mary most holy: help us to feel your pain.) Through your tears we will know his pain; through your woe we will know his love. Adiuva! Adiuva! Adiuva nos sciamus. (Help us know.)

O dulcis Virgo Mater, Maria sanctissima: Adiuva nos ad dolorem tuum sentire. For a mother to see her son betrayed, scourged, and hung— Adiuva! Adiuva! Adiuva! Adiuva nos sciamus.

O dulcis Virgo Mater, Maria sanctissima: Adiuva nos ad dolorem tuum sentire. To know your boundless sorrow is to truly know our Savior. Adiuva! Adiuva! Adiuva nos sciamus. Adiuva! Adiuva! Adiuva nos sciamus. Amen.

The tune, also by Fitzhugh, is arranged for unaccompanied SATB voices by Todd Marchand.

Composed by Todd Marchand. Christian,Sacred,Traditional. 16 pages. Con Spirito Music #933976. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1349231).

Three Evening Canticles were written as part of a setting of choral evensong for Church of the Holy Apostles - Anglican, Fort Worth, Texas. Metrical, mostly homophonic, and conservative in technical challenges and ranges, these canticles are accessible for small choirs and those of moderate ability, yet musically satisfying for large and accomplished groups.

Phos Hilaron (“O Gladsome Light”) is one of the earliest known Christian hymns (ca. 3rd-4th century) recorded outside of the Bible. Intended to be sung at the kindling of lights in the evening, it is sometimes known as the “lamp-lighting hymn” and has been adopted by some Anglican bodies as an optional invitatory canticle immediately preceding the psalm(s) appointed for the day.

Magnificat (The Song of Mary) is a scriptural canticle based on an account in the Gospel of Luke (1:46-55). Mary, the expectant mother of Jesus, visits her cousin  Elizabeth, the expectant mother of John the Baptist, who will prophetically proclaim the coming of the Messiah. Elizabeth praises Mary for her faith and subjection to God’s will, and Mary responds, “My soul doth magnify the Lord ... for he that is mighty hath magnified me ... and his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations.” The Magnificat is said or sung immediately after the first lesson (scripture reading) in the service of evening prayer.

Nunc Dimittis (The Song of Simeon) is also a scriptural canticle taken from Luke (2:29-32).  Simeon, a devout Jew, had been promised by the Holy Spirit that he would not die until he had seen the Messiah. When Mary and Joseph bring the infant Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem for the ceremony of redemption of the firstborn son, Simeon takes the child into his arms and says “Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace ... for mine eyes have seen thy salvation.” The Nunc Dimittis is said or sung after the second lesson in evening prayer.

Texts for these settings are from The Book of Common Prayer (2019), Traditional Language Edition, according to the use of the Anglican Church in North America, and they are largely the texts of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer of the Church of England.

An ideal program closer for elementary community choir and honor choir concerts, A Prayer for Every Day is not specifically religious, but expresses the aspirations of the child in whose voice it is written: to be courageous, truthful, caring of others and kind to them, and forgiving. Especially ïŹtting to young choristers is the concluding aspirational declaration: “To all upon my way, day after day, let me be hope, be joy! Let my life sing!” Written for and performed on the 25th anniversary concert of the Azle, Texas, ISD All-City Elementary Choir (2016), newly revised (2023).

Lively and energetic version of this very popular hit song by Beyoncé. It went straight to the top of the Country Music Billboard charts on its release. No wonder as it is a very catchy number that'll have your toes tapping as soon as it starts!
Arranged here for SSA voices and piano, all the parts get their chance to take the lead making it a real ensemble piece. Plenty of backing harmony, spoken Woos and Heys too as well as a bit of whistling in the middle!
If you are a mixed voice group this will work best by adding all your men to the Sop 2 line.
NB Key is higher than the Beyoncé original to better suit a choral setting and you can rest assured there is no explicit language in this version!
Part of the Keep Singing Series designed to be easy to learn and easy to teach.
