This is the first of Greg Bartholomew's three choral settings of text From the Odes of Solomon, as recorded by the Ars Brunensis Chorus.  

The Odes of Solomon are believed to have been written around the year 100 A.D., and include strong parallels to the Dead Sea Scrolls. Scholars have debated whether the Odes should be considered Jewish, Christian or Gnostic, and whether they were first written in Greek, Hebrew or Syriac. Early Christian writings refer to and quote from them. A Syriac manuscript containing the text of most of the Odes was discovered in 1909 by the English scholar J. Rendel Harris, and other partial texts in various languages have also been found. There are 42 Odes. Some fragments are still missing from Odes I and III, and no part of Ode II has yet been found. For these choral settings, I selected text from four of the Odes of Solomon which I found particularly compelling.

From the Odes of Solomon was premiered in concert on June 2, 2002, by the Ars Brunensis Chorus under the direction of conductor Roman Valek and choirmaster Dan Kalousek at the Husov Sbor, in Brno, Czech Republic.

One unique aspect of Hoover’s work is when he combines composition with his paintings, creating synergetic art that intrigues and captivate audiences and performers alike.  His paintings are seen in exhibitions and in concerts where his paintings are projected while musicians perform his music.  Whether making interdisciplinary works, or traditional stand-alone sonic or visual art, Hoover shapes his work through inner vision and practical experience.  Jeffrey Hoover’s background as a performer includes both classical and jazz music, as saxophonist and conductor.  His book The Arts and Society: Making New Worlds is published by Kendall Hunt Publishing.

Jeffrey Hoover was born on September 11, 1959, in Anderson, Indiana. He holds a Ph.D. in Fine Arts (Composition and Interdisciplinary Fine Arts) from Texas Tech University, as well as a M.M. and Bch.Sc. from Ball State University.  His career in higher education has included both music faculty and arts administrative appointments.

For soprano solo and SSA voices, cello, organ, and synthesizer, the music has a light, ethereal feeling. “Beati� can be taken as a sort of “Blessed are they� prefix for the movements which are not direct quotes from the Beatitudes. This is piece is a Latin setting of Luke 10:33 (“A certain Samaritan being on his journey came near him�) and Isaiah 66:13 (“As one whom the mother caresses, I will comfort you�). Quick, florid, and leaping passages begin in the solo voice as the chorus comments and then repeats those passages.
