While created in open scoring for beginning and young instrumentalists, these pieces could be used by anyone. They are accessible with as few as two players and as many as are available in almost any combination of instruments. The folk melodies are also excellent to use as warm-ups because they can serve the purpose while also providing aesthetic value. The teacher is encouraged to be flexible and creative with them. Directors are encouraged to perform these in various combinations and sets. Feel free to be creative. For example, repeats could be added featuring various soloists and/or small groupings in contrast with the full group (as in a concerto.) Creativity could be promoted by allowing students to make suggestions pertaining to the formal organization of the material. In addition to decisions as to which pieces to perform directors are encouraged to involve students in making creative decisions such as which ones to put together, which phrases to repeat in various combinations and instrumental subsets and other appropriate aesthetic decisions. Each piece could function as a locus for branching into various content areas in connection with social studies, integrated curriculum and/or inquiry. Many of the melodies have very smooth and conjunct voice leading making them excellent for solfege/sight-reading training. These melodies are offered as a resource for the teacher to use in a variety of ways and possibilities are unlimited. Lyrics are readily available online.

THIS IS AN ORIGINAL (simple) SONG I WROTE FOR MY MOM AND SISTER To be clear, it is a prayer written in musical form. I guess that makes it a psalm. A few nights ago I was feeling the pain of so many people around the globe who are suffering due to the pandemic. I was inspired to sit down and write an simple song of comfort for them-for us. The very same evening I started writing the song, unbeknownst to me, my sister was being taken to the hospital where she collapsed of heart failure and was life-flighted to the nearest cardiovascular facility.They put her on life support (ECMO and ventilator) to let her heart and lungs rest. Two days later, due to complications with circulation in her leg she had to be rushed into emergency surgery to pull the catheter from the artery leading to her heart. This required taking her off of life support four days earlier than they had planned. We were informed she may not make it. Thanks to thousands of people praying for her, and her own indomitable spirit, she pulled through-but not without more complications.A fever kicked in and lack of circulation in her other leg caused even more concern. Her heart and body were suffering greatly. As we prayed (and thousands of you from around the world prayed with us) I kept massaging and nuancing the exact melody line I wanted, at the same time interweaving various lyrics to intuit what felt right. I wanted this to be a song anyone could sing for their beloved family member or friend who was struggling. Every note, every syllable had to land just right-as if it was meant to be.Through all this my mother was going through her own bit of personal anguish. We were basically waiting for my sister to die. Due to COVID regulations nobody, not even family, could visit her in ICU. My mother bought a plane ticket... just in case. We hoped beyond hope that, If she died, she would not die alone. I wanted to finish this song by Mother's Day to share with my mother and my dear struggling sister who is also a mother of 5. I finished it and sang it through tears on Mother's Day. I have many friends show speak Spanish who are going through very difficult times due to COVID-19 and the subsequent quarantine. The second time through is a carefully crafted Spanish translation. I hope to hear people singing this far and wide with, to and for each other.

From the Swiss Guards in 18th-Century Paris) Der Arabi Nr. 1 (Trad) Arranged by Des McNutty The Basler Fasnacht, known locally in Basel Stadt (CH) as Die drey scheenschte Dääg (the three loveliest days), is a world-famous carnival where the Zeitgeist animates centuries of tradition. Local folks celebrate with a good-humoured satire of current events through costumes, masks, poetry and visual art on carnival floats and lanterns. Amongst many other activities, participants decorate the city and open ad-hoc bars to sustain everyone with drinks and characteristic foods, all of which led to the Basler Fasnacht being included on the Unesco Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017. Central to the whole experience is the music played on the streets, without electronic amplification, by two types of group: Gugge, with brass and percussion and Clique, with piccolos and side-drums made and played according to local custom. Some Fastnacht Fanfares contains historical melodies from the Cliques' repertoire arranged for Natural Trumpet Ensemble. The Signalkorps can have many players. The parts are in the low, principale register; ideal for newcomers and dilettantes. The ensemble parts require more skill and need only one player on each. s'Läggerli is used with kind permission from the Märtplatz-Clique Basel 1923. The similarity of the other melodies to trumpet calls may not be a total coincidence. Cavalry regiments, with their roots in armoured, mounted knights of even earlier times, were considered nobler; therefore they used royal trumpets and timpani for signalling and entertainment duties. So playing trumpet-style tunes on flutes adds a bit of class. Der Arabi Nr. 1 is now better known as The British Grenadiers from the early 1700s but can be traced as far back as the 1560s, when the Basler Fasncacht was already centuries old and the Schweizerpfeife (Swiss Flute), with drums, supplied the de rigueur regimental music for foot-soldiers all over Europe. Fasnacht is a glorious celebration laced with a melancholy reflected by the marching tempi of the Cliques: often slower than 90 BPM. A “standard� march is around 120 BPM. Vyyl Vergniege! (Enjoy!).

A new arrangement by Philip Le Bas of a thirteenth century French Christmas carol from Provence harmonized by Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-87, attrib.) and, more famously, by Georges Bizet (1838-75, in his L'Arlesienne Suite of 1872.) In France the melody is still tightly associated with Christmas, and French audiences start singing their own Christmas words whenever they hear the melody (the arranger has heard it himself!) The English translation used here is adapted from a variety of sources. The three kings (or more precisely the magi from St Matthew's gospel) are seen marching towards Bethlehem with their fantastic golden wealth and grandeur. But why are they going to see a low-born baby and why do they worship this child who will die on a cross? The organ sets the scene from the beginning with its marching accompaniment, and the first verse is sung in unison by all three parts. The second begins with a canon, as used by Bizet, and then breaks into harmony. The first section of the third verse is much quieter and legato, sung by the sopranos and altos, using wonderful chromatic harmonies based on another section from Bizet's suite. The lyrics express wonder at the beautiful music heard from the camp of the kings. The second section, sung in differentiated unison then begins to wonder why the kings stoop so low to a baby in a manger. Finally the fourth verse, sung in full harmony, returns to the marching accompaniment and reiterates the amazement of meeting these kings with their mysterious mission. The carol is aimed at parish choirs with limited resources, but a good organist. The melody is well-known, much of it is in unison, and other sections are relatively easy to sing. Care should however should be taken to sing the dotted rhythms accurately - this is what gives the carol its marching character.

BACKSTORY ON “The Dog Had…� Variations The origin of “The Dog Had…� Variations� stems from a frantic voicemail received from the composer’s mother-in-law many years ago while on a visit exclaiming that our dog at the time, Pepper, a chocolate-brown and white springer spaniel, “HAD� an accident of explosive proportions on their basement rug and that we needed to “GET HOME� and deal with it immediately. At first the family was taken aback by the phone message, but ultimately it became a source of hilarity and shortly afterward, the composer’s wife created a rhyme from the message and a tune immediately sprung from that. This tune simply became something our family sung together periodically over many year’s time for amusement until now when the composer came up with the idea to set it to variations for string quartet. In this work, the tune is first heard in simple fashion in its entirety in the viola. Fragments of the tune follow in various guises. For example, the rhythm of the words “GET HOME� as well as “I’VE HAD IT� are prominent thematic ideas used in the piece. When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, written by the Father of English Hymnody, Isaac Watts, in 1707 and later matched with Lowell Mason’s 1824 tune, HAMBURG, has long stood at the forefront of English hymnody.This arrangement, taken from my Passion Week cantata, Wounded, Bleeding, Still Proceeding, allows the full talent-spectrum of the Body of Christ to contemplate His sacrifice and offer their devotion.The first two stanzas feature an alto/soprano duet, set in a minor key with frequent diminished and augmented chords to reflect the despair and loss of a witness to the crucifixion. The entire third stanza, set for SATB chorus, never really moves off the F minor tonic until the end. That, and the relentless pounding of the bass line, ponders the witnesses' anguish and our vicarious experience of it through Scripture. So, sing these stanzas sadly – they are sad! When the choir enters, be sure to observe the swelling crescendos/diminuendos as the sorrow and love mingle together.The fourth stanza offers optional congregational participation and may be used to provide a responsorial to the Word of God or a preparation for the Table. The choir sings this stanza in four part harmony as the congregation joins on the melody. It stays in a major key and closely follows the traditional consonances used in Lowell Mason’s harmonization; thus, the choral parts will feel familiar and the congregational melody will flow naturally. Take the text literally (Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.) and sing it firmly, enthusiastically, passionately, but never triumphantly. Sing it as a song of personal devotion to commit all that you have, all that you are, and all that you will ever be, to the one who humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross (Phil 2:8b) so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him (2 Cor 5:21)The music is well within the grasp of any ensemble competent with traditional SATB anthems. The instrumental accompaniments are straightforward yet very colorful, suitable for high school or higher level players. When I Survey the Wondrous Cross is an unapologetic Christian worship anthem suitable for sacred services, yet it does not compromise on artistic expression.This is the orchestral accompaniment for the choral octavo version sold separately. FULL SCORE (Concert Pitch).  This four act contemporary opera, original libretto and music, by 21st century American composer James Nathaniel Holland is the story of the triumph of Love over Evil, however delayed, and the power of keeping steadfast to one’s righteous promise.  Based on the German fairy tale The Six Swans, in a kingdom, during Saxon times, the murderous daughter of an evil entity, Ravia, infiltrates and takes over the lives of a royal family due to the King’s rash promise to marry her many years before. The royal children are sent away by their father for safety to a hidden, woodland cottage, but Ravia discovers where they are and hexes the younger siblings, turning them into swallows.  Usha, the eldest, escapes and flees to the wilderness and is visited by the apparition of her dead mother who explains what is going on and that Usha must swear an oath of silence for six years to break the spell and change her siblings back into human form.Five years pass and a dashing and kind king, Rohric, of another kingdom, finds Usha while hunting, falls in love with and marries her, but Usha must remain silent and cannot reveal who she is.  Ravia, who now is sole queen of the old kingdom, is invited by Rohric’s nobles with hope to secure a “proper� wedding for Rohric.  Usha is accused falsely of killing her own child by the two and is sentenced to be burned at the stake, but as the bell tolls she finally can declare her innocence.  To the crowd’s amazement her siblings change back, all truth is revealed, and for Ravia’s failure, she is dragged back to hell by demons.  Singers:  King Alfred (bass), Ravia (soprano), Princess Usha (mezzo), Queen Mother Arna (soprano), the royal siblings (children’s/boy’s chorus), King Rohric (Tenor), The Evil Noble (baritone), An angel/a demon (bass), SATB ChorusScored for full orchestra.  Instrumentation:  picc/treble recorder, fl12, ob12, eh, cl12, bsn12, hrn 123, tpt123, trom12, tba, timp, perc.12 (bd, crash cym, ride cym with soft mallets and stick, glk, chimes, snar, tri), hrp, stringsDuration:  2 hoursFull Orchestral Score (concert pitch), Piano Vocal Score and Instruments Parts 1 (woodwinds, brass, perc.) and Parts 2 (harp and strings) sold separately.
