The first printed version of the song is in the public domain book Immortalia (1927). Later versions feature the eponymous Barnacle Bill, a fictional character loosely based on a 19th-century San Francisco sailor and Gold Rush miner named William Bernard. Versions are also known in England and Scotland from the early twentieth century. One version of Barnacle Bill refers to an exchange between Bill and a fair young maiden. Each verse opens with inquiries by the maiden, sung by women, or by men in falsetto, and continues with Bill's profane responses sung by men.Barnacle Bill the Sailor (Roud 4704) is an American drinking song adapted from Bollocky Bill the Sailor, a traditional folk song originally titled Abraham Brown.[1]There are several versions of the bawdy song in the Gordon Inferno Collection at the Library of Congress folklife archive. The first printed version of the song is in the public domain book Immortalia (1927). Later versions feature the eponymous Barnacle Bill, a fictional character loosely based on a 19th-century San Francisco sailor and Gold Rush miner named William Bernard.[2] Versions are also known in England and Scotland from the early twentieth century. The earliest known recording is an expurgated adaptation by Carson Robison and Frank Luther in 1928. This version was also recorded on May 21, 1930 by Bix Beiderbecke and Hoagy Carmichael with Carson Robison on vocals and released as a Victor 78, V-38139-A and 25371. In 1996 it was released on CD on the album Bix Beiderbecke 1927–1930.[3] According to Philip R. Evans, Bix Beiderbecke's biographer, in the second chorus of this recording, violinist Joe Venuti can be heard singing Barnacle Bill the Shit-head, either to express his attitude toward the record producer, or typical of his wacky sense of humor. Esten Spurrier, a friend of Beiderbecke's, is quoted by Evans as saying that Beiderbecke told him he could not believe the record would be pressed and had felt that it had been done just for laughs. Beiderbecke cut loose on the tune with what is believed to be one of his finest cornet solos. John Valby (aka Dr. Dirty) also recorded the song. The tune has inspired a Fleischer Studios Betty Boop cartoon and two films, as well as the name of a rock on Mars. Louis Jordan and the Tympany Five (then known as The Elks Rendezvous Band) recorded a clean version in 1938.[4] In the first Fleischer Popeye cartoon, Popeye the Sailor (1933), Barnacle Bill was used as the recurring theme for the Bluto character. A later Fleischer Popeye cartoon, Beware of Barnacle Bill (1935), is a mock operetta based around a toned-down version of the song.Example of lyrics[edit]One version of Barnacle Bill refers to an exchange between Bill and a fair young maiden. Each verse opens with inquiries by the maiden, sung by women, or by men in falsetto, and continues with Bill's profane responses sung by men.

Jazz Ensemble Jazz Ensemble - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.876417 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Joe Procopio. Baroque,Jazz. Score and parts. 42 pages. JoeCopio Music LLC #2032001. Published by JoeCopio Music LLC (A0.876417). THE BACH JAZZ SONATA FROM THE 3RD MOVEMENT OF THE FLUTE/VIOLIN SONATA II IN Eb* FOR Eb INSTRUMENTS Arr. By Joe Procopio These arrangements by Joe Procopio from J.S. Bach’s Flute/Violin Sonata II in Eb are special in many ways. Firstly, it fills the need for the very best in music combining the genres of both Classical and Jazz. In addition, it is also importantly unique because it may be performed by a variety of musicians. For example, the arrangement in C may be performed by 2 or more C Instruments including Flute, Piccolo, Oboe and Violin with a small band accompaniment (Piano, Guitar, Bass, and Drums - Guitar is optional). The work may also be performed with just the Piano and/or Guitar for accompaniment. What’s more, the Rhythm Track Accompaniment is available without the solo instruments adding to the already many attributes of this music that enhance its inherent genuine global appeal. This is critical because teachers, students and musicians worldwide are constantly seeking music of the highest quality that can be skillfully presented to the public while having, at the same time, built-in qualities both pleasing to the listener and the performer alike. Bach’s melodies have certainly stood the test of time and Jazz is without question internationally popular. That makes these arrangements truly worthy of attention from people, artists and publishers throughout the world. The composer personally has had great success with this work in many major concerts including its premier performance using a Flute Choir at a Civic Center Concert held in Syracuse, NY before several thousand people who triumphed the young musicians with a standing ovation. The melody by J.S. Bach used in this work is taken from the Bach-Gesellschaft Ausgabe Band 9 and 1 Kammermusik BWV 1031- known as the complete works of Johann Sebastian Bach which was published in 46 volumes from 1851-1899. A single volume was issued in 1926. The last surviving editor of the series died in 1928, and these volumes are now public domain worldwide. They are also held in acclaim because there are no articulation or expression marks in the Gesellshaft. Therefore, the articulation and expression marks written in these arrangements by the arranger are suggestions only. Musicians may perform the works in any manner best suited to the betterment of their own performance.

With pronounced usage of the pentatonic scale, Syzygy invokes my personal love of Chinese orchestra (as well as some genre fusion to spice up the general aesthetic). I was sixteen when I wrote this, my first large-scale piece, and therefore was very fond of it; but I never got so big for my britches that I didn't ask for help. After the four-ish months I spent writing this, I revised it with several local music directors and composers, as well as personal friends who played specific instruments used in the score. _____________________________ syz·y·gy /ˈsizijē/ noun ASTRONOMY a conjunction or opposition, especially of the moon with the sun. the planets were aligned in syzygy a pair of connected or corresponding things. animus and anima represent a supreme pair of opposites, the syzygy.

They can apply the theory and technique they have been learning in their music lessons to composing. The Perfect Pairing is the perfect tool for teachers to easily integrate simple and short music composition assignments into their students’ lessons. This workbook contains listening sheets and composition exercises. The listening sheets contain a brief introduction to a musical element, an overview of a composer, and a suggested composition to listen to. The composition sheets contain a project for students where they write 4-8 measures of music from a focused story, thought, vision, or idea. They use the musical elements they have been learning to write their composition. When your student composes music, the teaching opportunities will open up as they ask questions regarding music theory, notation, and methodology. You will also gain insight into your student’s level of music comprehension when they show you their composition. Remember that anyone can be a composer! The journey does not need to start with a masterpiece, just a start!

Published by Matthew Scott Phillips (A0.1004162). While invaluable to the development of Western civilization, the Greek philosopher Socrates is believed by some scholars not to exist. According to this theory, he is not a living person, but a metaphor used to teach philosophical ideas to newcomers. Others point to extant evidence that Socrates was indeed real, and had his own inner circle of students.   This piece is a reflection on the verisimilitude of Socrates’s existence. It is a struggle with the question of whether so influential a figure can truly be imaginary and ultimately an arrival at the decision that his realness is not as important as his influence.

Duration: 4:25 Not difficult, but requires sensitivity & dynamic control. Suitable for recitals, church meditations, or school programs.   Dvořák Background Antonín Dvořák (1841 –1904) was, of course, a composer from Czechoslovakia. As a matter of fact, he was among the first Bohemian composers to attain universal recognition. It is important to realize that the late Romantic Nationalist period featured composers who used traditional and folk elements to portray the character of their nation. In particular, we see this in the music of Grieg (Norway), Finland (Sibelius), and Smetana (Bohemia).  Dvořák relied markedly on rhythms and other characteristics of Moravian and Bohemian folk music. Ascent to Fame Dvořák was truly a child musical prodigy on the violin. The premiere performances of his compositions notably occurred in 1872 and 1873. He submitted his First Symphony in particular to a German competition, but it failed to win. Consequently, in 1874 he presented two more symphonies to the Austrian State Prize for Composition. Johannes Brahms was the principal of the jury and was accordingly very impressed. They forthwith awarded the prize to Dvořák in 1874, 1876, and 1877. At this point, Brahms thereupon endorsed Dvořák to the publisher Simrock. Later, the publisher commissioned Dvořák to compose the Slavonic Dances, Op. 46. These became popular overnight and, as a result, Dvořák's worldwide status was launched. International Status Dvořák visited England upon invitation nine times. On each visit, he frequently conducted performances of his own compositions. He conducted concerts of his music, especially in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Eventually, the Prague Conservatory in fact appointed Dvořák as a professor. There, to be sure, he wrote his famous Dumky Trio. United States Consequently, the National Conservatory of Music of America appointed him as director in 1892. As a result, Dvořák composed his two most famous symphonic works: the Symphony No. 9 (From the New World), which spread his name universally, and his Concerto for Cello and Orchestra, one of the most famous of all cello works. Moreover, he wrote his most celebrated American String Quartet during this time. At the same time, because of his growing recognition in Europe and his homesickness for his own country, he left to return to Bohemia in 1895.
