This is my second piece that I have wrote for piano and in general. The reason I chose the name Yesterday's Future is basically because I wanted to write a piece where it portrays moving on from something happening in you life. If I were to write it again, I would probably change up the melody a bit halfway through to make it more interesting, but nonetheless, I am pretty happy with it.

As the theme continues throughout the whole the piece, changing very subtly, it resembles something you need to let go of. At the end of the piece with the held right hand and moving left hand, I wanted to make that part sound like it is moving on with the dynamics changing to resemble anger and relief. Anyway, thanks again for listening, hope you enjoyed it and there is much more to come!

Concerto for Soprano Saxophone was commissioned and premiered by Swedish saxophonist Anders Paulsson in 1998 with the Northern Arizona University Orchestra, Robert Baldwin conducting. I knew of Paulssonā€™s expertise and artistry as I had composed my cantata Feet of Jesus with his playing in mind. The first movement contains thematic material that is repeated and developed in the second and third movements. I wanted to take advantage of the melodic potential of the soprano sax, exploring nuances of color throughout the range. There are slight suggestions of jazz elements. This first movement introduces the sound of the soprano saxophone and suggests what is to come later on with more challenging technical passages.

Sea Songs, commissioned jointly by Ars Nova Copenhagen and Glasgow Concert Halls, is a kind of sequel to Martland's Street Songs (originally written for the Kings Singers and Evelyn Glennie). As with the earlier piece, Martland made use of to the library of the English Folk Song and Dance Society at Cecil Sharp House in north London. I wanted specifically to find texts that were not just the usual nautical heave-ho sort of thing, but instead explored the dangers and hardships still being experienced by sailors as recently as the early 19th century. I was also very happy to see in these texts the sense of camaraderie and mutual support that existed between the sailors. (Steve Martland) Dance to your Daddy sets the scene of a sailor's wife at home, dandling her baby son and singing to him about his daddy away fishing, and about the future. Both the tune and the words come from the Northumberland area around Newcastle. This song is very well known in the UK and gave the title to a famous television series When the boat comes in. Fire Down Below is about the effects of fire - a constant danger on board wooden ships. At the end of this song the words take on an extended meaning: Fire in our hearts for the friends that we love. The Dead Horse is about the initial month of work without pay in which all seamen had to take part. They referred to it as the dead horse - hence the expression to flog a dead horse when something is a waste of time. The seamen resented this unpaid time, and the text expresses their frustrations metaphorically by listing what they would do to the horse! The music's frantic gallop alludes to the horse's desperation. Although The Sea Martyrs presents itself as a ballad, this text has a more literary feel, and unlike the other songs it doesn't include a chorus refrain. It concerns the sailors' lack of pay, the consequences of asking for pay (being hanged!), and the poverty of their families at home. The poem portrays the sailors' deaths as an almost religious sacrifice to help future seamen. At the end of the work, the opening of Dance to your Daddy returns as a kind of descant, sung by an angel calling to the hanged men. Ā© Paul Hillier, 2012.

The word 'intarsia' is derived from the Latin word interserere which means to insert. The technique of intarsia inlays sections of wood (at times with contrasting ivory or bone, or mother-of-pearl) within the solid stone matrix of floors and walls or of table tops and other furniture; by contrast marquetry assembles a pattern out of veneers glued upon the carcass. It is also a knitting technique used to create patterns with multiple colors.

This beautiful snapshot weaves its melodic lines in and out of the this interesting, but surprisingly effect texture. This piece marked the beginning of a tradition in my family. To mark their senior years, I compose a piece for each of my children. This piece is open to whatever they wish and thus,my oldest (to whom this piece is lovingly dedicated), decided she wanted to play a piece with a couple of her friends.

I began to compose this piece unpretentiously with the intention of doing a prelude of 3 minutes. The beginning of the play, however, presents itself childish and naĆÆve, as a child walking in a indolent way and ended up reminding me of video game or cartoon songs and a period of childhood between 8 and 10 years. I then structured the piece to show some pleasures of childhood: walking, running, flying, playing, swimming and dancing. Most of the images selected for this movie in youtube (https://youtu.be/BTZwwt8wYb0) represent what I wanted to express through my sound choices. For those who enjoy analyzing musical structures a short summary follows: The piece begins with the exposition of a rhythmic theme in B flat minor, followed by a small melodic theme constructed through the same motif presented at the beginning of the piece, but in D flat major. The piece then moves towards a moment of transition, a bridge between B flat minor and B minor. This transition is not only modulation, it is a transformation of the rhythmic aura to a melodic (B minor) episode . This episode is presented as a song A, B, with small variations. After the melodic episode, another moment of transition begins to return to the tonic (B flat minor) for reexposition of the rhythmic theme, but with another outfit. The piece then ends with a delicious codetta full of tenderness.
