Published by Alexander Klein (A0.1068453). Ipa is a poem written by Vito Apshana, a native Colombian and a member of the Wayuu people, an aborigine civilization from northern Colombia. The poem's central subject is the rock, not merely as an object (as we tend to perceive it in the industrialized world) but as a live witness of our ancestors in planet Earth. Ipa, just like all the poems and prayers that come from Amerindian cultures, is an ode to Nature and, thus, an ode to God. When I set this beautiful poem to music, I decided to convey the Amerindian world using the modal and pentatonic scales that are so prevalent in their music. However, since I am in no way truly connected to Amerindian culture, this piece is still a reflection of a western man's perspective of the aborigines. Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera would have called this work an experiment in Subjective Nationalism, that is, music that reflects foreign cultures using Western imagination and, thus, a primarily Western musical language. Ipa, then, is my personal homage to a rich, indigenous culture that still today breathes nature and magic in its own unique conception of the world. - Alexander Klein.

If I were to write it again, I would probably change up the melody a bit halfway through to make it more interesting, but nonetheless, I am pretty happy with it.As the theme continues throughout the whole the piece, changing very subtly, it resembles something you need to let go of. At the end of the piece with the held right hand and moving left hand, I wanted to make that part sound like it is moving on with the dynamics changing to resemble anger and relief. Anyway, thanks again for listening, hope you enjoyed it and there is much more to come!

Spirituals were birthed and rooted in the experience of chattel slavery in the United States—and arose out of, as Arthur C. I hoped an appropriate way to honor the experience of the original writers might be to invite the contemporary listener to envision and commit to a better, more just world today—a world of inclusion, radical kindness, compassion, love, and grace—a world where we have the courage to champion the inherent dignity and value of all people, a world where we will be done with all the ways we deny a person’s worth. A world where “heaven has come to earth.� In this arrangement, spoken word is incorporated throughout, intended to heighten the intensity of the performance, and meant to give a sense of immediacy to the challenge for the choir and audience to work together for justice, equity, and wholeness. Spoken word has often been used as the language of protest—and I include it intentionally as a way of giving voice to the choir members (and listener)—where all can stand in solidarity against oppression and injustice. I am a long time fan of CPE Bach's music. But I have confess that the Württemberg Sonatas never did much for me. Maybe it's because all the previous albums of the work were recorded on the harpsichord, which I hate. But, when I heard Keith Jarrett do these sonatas on a Steinway grand, I was blown away!!! So blown away was I that I immediately wanted to do my own version of these great works by CPE. I am calling my work, after John Cage, Sonatas and Interludes.
