Pierre-Claude-François BOUILLON (18??-1883) was the principal conductor of the Cirque Fernando, the famous circus of the Belle Époque who inspired many impressionist artists, such as Renoir, Degas, Toulouse-Latrec and Georges Seurrat, whose masterpiece “Le Cirqueâ€� was inspired by this Circus. Bouillon was a very prolific compposer, writing many works for solo instrument and piano, marches, galops, waltzs, polkas and other dances. These works were intended to illustrate the various numbers presented during performances..L'Oiseau Mouche (“the Humming Birdâ€�) is an extended fantasy in the form of a tryptiche. After an initial arioso and cadenza, there is an extended polka in A-B-A form. This is followed by a valse which begins as  a “valse-hésitationâ€� but finished brilliantly.

Genau aus diesem Ruf und der Situation entstand in meinem Kopf dieses Stück - voll guter Laune! Das Stück darf gern etwas wild gespielt werden, wie eben der Wettlauf unserer Kinder, als sie noch klein waren! Es hat, wie ich erst später sah, wieder nur die von mir so geliebten weißen Tasten. Und es kling trotzdem jazzig! Ich habe auch ein Big-Band-Arrangement mit Solos davon, die du hier in den Teilen B und C siehst.In our familiy holidays suddenly our children called: „Wer zuerst oben ist! (Who´s up first?)and  there was a race upstairs! Right from this call and this situation this piece of music originated in my head – full of good mood! You may play this piece a bit wildly – just like the competition race of our children in the time when they were still small. As I noticed later, the piece has only white keys – and sounds jazzy nevertheless! The original version was a piece for big band with solos (look part B and C). The piece fits on two pages and has a rondo form as it is written above: Intro A B A C A. Sorry to say that my music program does not understand it, I don´t know why, but you`ll understand it, and this is the main thing! Have great fun with sports and games! And music! Das Stück passt gut auf zwei Seiten und ist auch in Rondoform, wie es darüber steht, leicht zu verstehen: Intro ABAC A. Leider versteht es mein Notensatzprogramm nicht, warum, weiß ich nicht. It was republished in the Olney Hymns, 1779, Bk. i., No. 79, with the heading Praise for the Fountain opened. It is based on Zech. xiii. 1, In that day there shall be a Fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness. This hymn in full or abbreviated is in extensive use in all English-speaking countries.A well known form of this hymn is From Calvary's Cross a Fountain flows. This appeared in Cotterill's Selection, 8th ed., 1819, No. 43, in 5 stanzas of 4 lines, and consists of stanzas i.-v. very much altered. In Bickersteth's Christian Psalmody, 1833, No. 49, that same opening stanza is given, with a return, in most of the remaining six stanzas, to the original text. The question as to by whom these alterations were made, first in Cotterill's Selection off 1819, and then in Bickersteth's Christian Psalmody, 1833, is answered by R. W. Dibdin, in the Christian Annotator, vol. iii., No. 76, for July 5, 1856, p. 278

This sermon song duet is based on a sermon  preached by Dr. Paul de Jong at First Presbyterian Church, Fort Myers, Florida,on September 17, 2023.  The sermon was entitled, Who is This ? based on Mark 4:35-5:20.  My song is told from the view point of the disciples who were in awe of what they saw as Jesus calmed the seas and cast out demons into a herd of swine from a man who was possessed.  The disciples, at this point in the Gospel of Mark, were being taught by Jesus directly while the masses got parables.  But they still did not know really who Jesus was.  The duet stresses their  confusion of exactly , Who is He ? It has a haunting melody to express how the disciples must have felt.  My SERMON SONGS are a new genre in religious music in which I take sermon notes and turn them into notes in scores which I hope will be sung in places of worship everywhere.
