On December 14, 2012, at 9:35 a.m., the entire country stood motionless, for a horrific act of terror was underway. Adam Lanza shot and killed 20 first-graders and 6 adults, at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut; a moment in history as one of the worst school shootings that our country has ever faced. Every single child which was murdered had a future of their own, taken away at the hands of a ruthless gunman, who in an instant, ended any chance that these 20 children had to have a happy life. Along with these children, were the 6 heroic staff members who so selflessly gave their life in order to stop this perpetrator who came to destroy the fragile object that we all call life. The title of this piece, The Sandy Hook Lullaby, is symbolic to represent the deaths and aftermath on that faithful day. This particular piece is a lullaby to represent the day that the victims lives were taken, ending with a peaceful goodbye. The song starts strong and valiant, to represent the beginning and potential of a new day. As it progresses, the song softens a bit, with clarinet lead, which represents the students learning in the classroom and the staff working as normal. A swell in volume represents the knowledge learned, as they are completely unaware of the events to follow. Halfway through, terror strikes. The percussion solo is representative of the the 5 minutes that the entire attack took place. The entire finale of the song is to represent the peaceful rest of those murdered, the final goodbye. The song ends softly, as the victims are put to rest, and because most of the victims were children, this comes in the form of a lullaby. Just as a loving and caring parent would put their child to sleep with a song, we give our final goodbyes with this Sandy Hook Lullaby. One of Queen's most moving songs, released as a single after singer Freddie Mercury's untimely death at the age of 45.  From the album Innuendo, it was largely written by the band's drummer, Roger Taylor, who later said I was sitting at home in a rather reflective mood and I did know that Freddie was ill, and I think it came out of that slightly melancholic mood. I guess I was trying to put an optimistic slant on it in a way—those were the days then. And these are the days of our lives—Today is more important than yesterday..

This stately canon is perfect for any festive occasion where there is a pipe organ, but it was specifically written as part of the Medieval Wedding Suite to dovetail with the Agincourt Hymn by Dunstable.  Beginning with a simple statement of the original motive on which is was based, it crescendos to a cinematic full-chord ending.  It would work well for both the wedding party and bride.  Check my composer page for the other pieces to this Medieval-based set of works for weddings!  I wrote them with the couple in mind who love everything fantasy, Renaissance Fair, or cosplay.

Matthew's main bass in the Fender Urge II Bass, an Artist Signature bass endorsed by Stu Hamm.This song is in the key of E major and is about 3’20 long. The tempo is at 114 bpm, and the groove sounds very prominent in this tune. NGC 4907 The barred spiral galaxy known as NGC 4907 shows its starry face from 270 million light-years away to anyone who can see it from the Northern Hemisphere. II. Interstellar Comet Borisov On Aug. 30, 2019, when amateur astronomer Gennady Borisov gazed upward with his homemade telescope, he spotted an object moving in an unusual direction. Now called 2I/Borisov, this runaway point of light turned out to be the first confirmed comet to enter our solar system from some unknown place beyond our Sun’s influence. III.  Rose Galaxies The image shows a large spiral galaxy apparently attached to another one by a swirl of stars – a rose-like effect caused by the gravitational pull of the galaxy below it. The sprinkling of blue jewel-like points across the top of the larger galaxy is the combined light from clusters of intensely bright and hot young blue stars. These massive stars glow fiercely in ultraviolet light.Duration:  11:30

The Little Bud Car originally ran from Victoria to Courtenay on Vancouver Island.  This piece is a nostalgic rememberance in music.  The musicians  play their music as if they are crossing over various different patterns of track.    As is the case with all of these pieces from The Scampering Scarecrow teachers will find that a third violin has been added for those students who are not quite ready to handle second violin.  There is also a piano accompaniment which can be used for rehearsal purposes.  A fun piece to play.

I dedicate this piece to my friends in the composer/singer collective, the Ad hoc Chorale, who tested out this piece in one of our informal workshops and offered valuable comments. Optional endings. Note that choirs have been given the option to choose which of the 3 endings they would like to sing, depending on how they feel the “story line� in the song should best reach its conclusion: (1) The “happy� ending appears to indicate that the narrator has been reunited with the friend or lover who departed. (2) The “less happy� ending plants a seed of doubt that no such reunion has happened; it may be in the narrator’s head. (3) The “even less happy� ending leaves listeners in even more doubt. NB: One day I woke up to the realization that I had independently written four choral works, each of which had evoked a different season, and so it seemed natural to group them together into a choral suite that I have called The Ottawa Four Seasons Suite. “How heavy lies the heart� seemed to work perfectly as the musical representative of an autumnal spirit.
