This is a dazzling piece of choral music, for the choir looking for something with wow factor. Arranged by the composer from the third song in his Idylls cycle, the music assimilates the concept of freedom in a way that is dazzling in its effect: conventionally modal choir harmonies yet with total fluidity of modulation; having a regular metre and yet always trying to break free from it; a piano accompaniment that is a work of art in its own right (and needs to be played as such), a rippling tapestry of sound whose rhythms cut across those of the choir yet whose harmonies complement the voices perfectly. Together the piano and choir demonstrate more clearly than could words alone, that freedom and diversity working together can achieve great things. This is a celebration of liberty and its place in the civilisations of the United Kingdom, the United States of America and all other countries where freedom of expression is valued and inspires people to majestic works. The choir parts are of intermediate difficulty. The piano part requires a fairly proficient pianist. Well worth the effort and thoroughly recommended.

Published by Sy Brandon (A0.1214466). Divertissement was composed during 2005 for the Cadence Music Ensemble and rewritten in 2010 for Bret Pimentel, a virtuoso performer on multiple woodwinds. This version was created in 2023 and is a showcase for members of the quintet. A divertissement is a multi-movement composition designed to divert, entertain or to amuse. There are six contrasting movements in this composition; Intrada (flute feature), Nocturne (Horn feature), Valse (bassoon feature), Marche (clarinet feature), Romanza (oboe feature), and Galop (spotlight on members of the ensemble). The Intrada is energetic and playful with a lot of interplay between instruments. The Nocturne, being a night piece, is both lyrical and mysterious. The Waltz is in a flowing waltz tempo with occasional shifts away from three beats in the measure. The Marche is not a piece that would be used in a parade. It is a march that exists in the mind of a child who is playing with toy soldiers; therefore there is playfulness and humor that would not occur in a functional march. Lyrical lines and expressiveness are the predominating features of the Romanza. The piece comes to a rousing close with the Galop, which is a “perpetual motion� type of movement with a lot of rhythmic variety.

The Lost Chord is a song composed by Arthur Sullivan in 1877  at the bedside of his brother Fred during Fred's last illness.  The manuscript is dated 13 January 1877; Fred Sullivan died five days later.  The lyric was written as a poem by Adelaide Anne Procter called A Lost Chord,  published in 1858 in The English Woman's Journal.   The song was immediately successful and became particularly associated with  American contralto Antoinette Sterling, with Sullivan's close friend and mistress, Fanny Ronalds,  and with British contralto Clara Butt.   Sullivan was proud of the song and later noted:  I have composed much music since then,  but have never written a second Lost Chord.  Many singers have recorded the song, including Enrico Caruso, who sang it at the  Metropolitan Opera House on 29 April 1912 at a benefit concert for families of victims  of the Titanic disaster.   The piece has endured as one of Sullivan's best-known songs,  and the setting is still performed today.  .
