The weight of Ennio Morriocone in the composition of film music in the second half of the s. XX is indisputable, in terms of innovation and production volume. The particular technique of treating the melodic cells will become a paradigm of his language, along with the use of innovative timbres, which were not common in the orchestral music of the time. The close collaboration with Sergio Leone during the 60s will contribute to consolidating him as a benchmark in the sound of the Western genre. After the success of the so-called Dollar Trilogy, Paramount Pictures asked Leone to repeat the formula before tackling other projects. This one, with a more generous budget, will start filming C'era una volta il West, an eclectic story in which all the characteristic elements of the genre are represented: the railroad, the gunslingers and bandits, the american pioneers, the woman of character indomitable and the enigmatic man in search of revenge. Leone again entrusted the soundtrack to Ennio Morricone, playing this one a fundamental role in the story. The present transcription incorporates the original sounds of the author, such as the harmonica, the electric and classical guitar, the harpsichord or the choir, in the ensemble of the concert band, seeking to achieve a greater sound fidelity with the score. Understanding the difficulty that having these resources can entail, the previous specific parts are of an optional nature, so that the arrangement also works without them, and also if any of the parts is incorporated independently of the rest.

Arrangement by Daniel Kaplan for woodwind quintet of Bach's Prelude and Fugue No. 20 in A minor from Book 1 of The Well Tempered Clavier. This monumental fugue employs a dramatic subject that later appears in inversion, leading to some very striking counterpoint; by the end, the emotional impact is overwhelming. Kaplan is engaged in a project to make classics from other genres available to woodwind players and has arranged several other great works for this ensemble, including many of his favorites from The Well Tempered Clavier (also avaiable on this website). The woodwind quintet is especially well suited for contrapuntal music since the distinctive tone colors of the wind instruments bring out the contrapuntal lines and make them clearer to the listener.

Um Pife pro Pai. Original tune written by Daniel Ganc and David Ganc. Son and father composed together this music. Daniel gave a Pife -  a bamboo flute typical from the northeast region from Brazil – as a present to me. I immediately improvised some phrases and sent them to Daniel, who harmonized it to complete and organize the song. After that I wrote this arrangement for 2 C Flutes and String Orchestra. The result is a very cheerful forró that we dedicated to the luthier of the pife, the virtuoso Alexandre Rodrigues. It was premiered in Manaus at the XX International Flute Festival by ABRAF - 2024, accompanied by the Amazonas Chamber Orchestra. The piece has an interactive improvisation section for the 2 soloists.

The Twenty-four Exercises for Two Cellos, Op. 159, by Johann Justus Friedrich Dotzauer, continue and conclude the series dedicated to the neck positions. Giovanni Gabrieli (c.1557-1612) was one of the most influential composers of his time.
Known for his compositions using antiphonal style, this Sonata XX a22 would have fit well in St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice.
This is perhaps the largest ensemble for the time using 22 instruments in 5 choirs. It was published posthumously in 1615 and shows a great transition from the Renaissance to Baroque style.
This advanced arrangement is for a choir of 22 trombones, with alternate trumpet and French horn parts for
the top voices.

The Twelve Original Pieces for Two Cellos, dedicated to beginners, Op. 63, by J. J. F. Dotzauer (1783—1860) is a most colourful collection, containing a spicy mix of arias from famous operas, original themes, and fugues. The arias are mostly from W. A. Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito, and G. Rossini’s Tancredi, with a theme and variation from The Magic Flute crowning them all. Even without employing the thumb, these pieces are challenging, and should not be underestimated. They explore all seven positions, making this the most well-rounded collection of the five (Opp. 52, 58, 156, 159), and a must-have for all cello students. This edition comes in two versions, Original & Collectors’ Edition. The Original version is available in either of the following variants: score only, parts only, and score & parts. It is based on the first edition published by Dotzauer at Breitkopf & Härtel in 1823. The Collector’s Edition adds the new edition of these pieces appeared in the 57 Little Duets compiled by Johannes Klingenberg (1852—1905), and in the early XX century edition by Alwin Schöder (1855—1928). When the Reed sisters, Elizabeth & Lydia, asked me to write a new work for two pianos, I wasn't quite sure where or how to begin. Then I came upon a book on numerology by Annemarie Schimmel, The Mystery of Numbers. In it I discovered a lot of fascinating things, mystical and magical, associated with each number from one to 10,000.

Since I would be writing a piece for a duo, double digits would do the trick. Number 22 stood out. It has two important associations: the Hebrew alphabet has 22 letters, and there are 22 major arcana cards or allegories of the Tarot. Perfect! I could write 22 pieces, each a musical rendering of a card.  And, coincidentally, this work will opus 66.

For pictorial inspiration, I bought a Pierpont Morgan Library copy of the Visconti-Sforza Tarot Cards from 15th century Italy.

For musical inspiration, I listened to the wonderful salon music of the Polish composer Frederic Chopin, the American composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk, and the Brazilian composer Ernesto Nazareth.

The 22 pieces in the Visconti-Sforza Tarot Cards are:

Zero Il Matto The Fool entertains the gathered guests with a tarantella.
I. Il Saltimbanco The Mountebank shuffles his cards and does a samba.
II. La Papessa The High Priestess concocts a magic potion.
III. L'Imperatrice The Empress dances all night.
IV. L'Imperatore The Emperor promenades into the Great Hall and inspects the courtiers.
V. Il Papa The Pope makes a proclamation that all sinners will be pardoned.
VI. L'Amore Love in a tropical paradise.
VII. Il Carro Triumphant in battle, the gladiators ride into town on chariots.
VIII. La Giustizia Justice is swift and unrelenting.
IX. Il Vecchio The Old Man reminisces.
X. La Ruota della Fortuna Fortunes rise and fall unpredictably.
XI. La Fortezza Strength and fortitude will prevail.
XII. Il Penduto Lamentation for the Hanged Man.
