It was modeled on a summer camp format and featured adult education and social reform. Christian instruction, preaching, and worship were a big part of the Chautauqua experience, although some of them were more secularized and resembled summer school.♫ Growing up in a hymn singing church, there were 2 wonderful hymns that spoke of the holiness of God: Holy, Holy, Holy and Day is Dying in the West. The first celebrates the morning, the second the evening and night. In the Mood was a huge hit for the Glenn Miller Orchestra in 1940, but the melody for In the Mood had been around in different versions with different bands for at least a decade before. But it was the Glenn Miller version that grabbed the public’s attention, becoming almost the soundtrack to the Second World War. In the Mood has never lost its appeal and has been recognised as culturally significant by the Library of Congress. In 1951 In the Mood became the first piece of music to be played by a computer.This arrangement of In the Mood is written with accessibility in mind. It is arranged for Clarinet Quartet or Choir; that is for three Bb Clarinets, plus Bass Clarinet. There is also an alternative part 3 for Alto Clarinet in Eb. This arrangement aims to deliver the big band sound with a smaller group. It starts with a romantic melody played by both violin and cello, followed by a more energetic rhythmic piece reminiscent of eastern European music, followed by a 5/4 passage similar to Turkish music, followed by a rhythmic section representing India, and ending with a melodic in pentatonic scale representing China. The last is the melody in my composition, Theme and Variations for Er Hu (2-string Chinese violin) and Orchestra. The whole journey takes about 6 minutes. An elderly cello-playing friend assured me that the rapidly moving pizzicatos were quite playable. The audio clip is computer playback.
