The Marines’ Hymn is the official hymn of the United States Marine Corps and the oldest official song in the US Armed Forces, authorised for use by the Commandant of the Marine Corps in 1929. The lyrics for the hymn were written by an anonymous author prior to this and includes lines referencing famous battles such as “To the shores of Tripoli†referring to the First Barbary War and “The Halls of Montezuma†referencing the Battle of Chapultepec. The music, however, originates from the “Gendarmes’ Duet†from Offenbach's 1859 opera Genevieve de Brabant.
 
Sammy Nestico, whilst best known as a composer, arranger, and conductor for the Count Basie Orchestra and as a prolific composer of television themes including shows such as M*A*S*H*, and Charlie’s Angels, was also the director of the U.S. Marine Band under both John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. In 1968, Nestico took the original version of the hymn and revamped it in his own inimitable style giving us Apotheosis - Marines' Hymn.

This Australian composer spent his life as a music publisher, with agents across the globe - in particular the USA. He was publishing brass band journals etc., hence this piece for organ. I am beginning to wonder whether it was the organ composition first, or whether it was transcribed from the brass band score to an organ reduction... .

Written for Toby Carr and Sergio Bucheli, Theorbo Chaser is a rarity - a theorbo duet. Perhaps rarer still, the melody is a canon in the bass. The theorbo has beautiful resonant bass strings and Theorbo Chaser exploits this resonance with delicate colour in the upper strings. The canon is at the second so the melody appears to be climbing on itself as each theorbo comes in above the other. Thus the harmony emerges from the melody, rising up to the colourful treble strings and then settling back to a bass ostinato, when the two instruments become one. More at www.dominicmcgonigal.com.
