Cello,Piano - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549463 Composed by Aleksandr Scriabin (1871 - 1915). Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Instructional,Romantic Period,Sacred,Standards. Score and part. 12 pages. Jmsgu3 #3499715. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549463). Score: 8 pages, solo part: 2 pages, piano part: 2 pages. Duration: 3:10. An introspective and meditative work with a lot of dynamic and phrasing nuance. Works well for church meditations or recital encores. Background First of all, Scriabin composed mostly for the solo piano and also the orchestra. This is probably because he was a gifted pianist and therefore certainly appreciated the piano. Scriabin grew up in the late Romantic period, consequently, he was fond of the great piano masters of the time. As a result, he wrote his first noteworthy compositions in the manner of Chopin and Liszt. Forms Likewise, Scriabin used many of the same forms as Chopin. These certainly include the étude, prelude, nocturne, and even the mazurka. In contrast, as he developed his own sense of style his music became more and more unusual. So, the last five of his Piano Sonatas do not have a key signature and therefore lean towards atonality. Philosophy Scriabin also developed a keen interest in philosophy and likewise poetry. He was above all particularly fascinated by Nietzsche, Delville, and Blavatsky. Consequently, he finally established his own ideas about metaphysics and certainly mysticism. Scriabin consequently advanced theories about the relationship between color and musical keys. Synesthesia He also may have experienced a condition called synesthesia where he could probably sense a response created from a different stimulus. Therefore, it was almost as if he could see music and hear colors. Scriabin, therefore, arranged the colors in a circle similar to the circle-of-fifths and assigned each key area a color. Finally, he assigned the key of C to the color red, while the key of G was orange. Similarly, he assigned D to yellow, A to green, and so forth. Strangely, he did not differentiate between major and minor key colors.  Multimedia Hence, his ability to translate colors into music certainly gave Scriabin a most noteworthy interest in creating multimedia events. Furthermore, He designed his biggest work, the Mysterium, to last an entire week. Even more, Scriabin made plans not only for music, but also colored lights, incense, and dancing. He designed the performance to occur in the foothills of the Himalaya mountains. The Mysterium was never performed, and only sketches of the work remain. Modern Performances In modern times, we often experience performances of Scriabin’s most famous completed works accompanied by colored laser lights and incense. These are the Poem of Ecstasy (completed in 1908) and the Poem of Fire (completed in 1910). The lighting effects for these early performances were accomplished by the clavier à lumiéres. It was a keyboard instrument that projected colored light onto a screen.

Saxophone Quartet,Woodwind Ensemble Alto Saxophone,Baritone Saxophone,Soprano Saxophone,Tenor Saxophone - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1421819 Composed by Henry Purcell. Arranged by Robert Stevens. Baroque,Chamber,Classical,Early Music. 32 pages. SAXpress.com #1003167. Published by SAXpress.com (A0.1421819). Suite from Abdelazer Henry Purcell (1659-1695) SATB Saxophone Quartet Suite from Abdelazer by Henry Purcell, arranged for saxophone quartet SATB. Purcell wrote the incidental music for the play Abdelazer (sometimes spelled 'Abdelazar') in 1695, shortly before his death. It is a lively mix of songs and dances of the time. Typical of the day, several of the movements became well known as popular songs. The rondo was later made famous by Benjamin Britten, who used it as the theme for his set of variations, ‘The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra’. The rondo as well as another selection, the Hornpipe, was included in the 2005 film Pride and Prejudice. This transcription for saxophone quartet SATB of Suite from Abdelazar is comprised of five of the ten selections Purcell wrote for the play. The movements are as follows: I. Overture II. Minuet III. Hornpipe IV. Air V. Rondo About the Composer: Henry Purcell (born c. 1659, London, England—died November 21, 1695, London) was an English composer of Baroque music. Purcell's musical style was uniquely English, although it incorporated Italian and French elements. Generally considered among the greatest English opera composers, Purcell is included with John Dunstaple and William Byrd as England's most important early music composers. Later, Purcell's music also had a strong influence on the composers of the English musical renaissance of the early 20th century. The cause of Purcell's untimely death at the age of 36 is unclear. There are many theories, some preposterous (he died from chocolate poisoning), some more likely: he died of tuberculosis. Purcell was universally mourned as a very great master of music.  Following his death, the officials at Westminster honoured him by unanimously voting that he be buried with no expense spared in the north aisle of the Abbey.

Arranged by Lyndell Leatherman. Christian,Lent,Religious,Sacred. Score. 2 pages. Leatherman Music Services #885956. Published by Leatherman Music Services (A0.1295658). Welcome to this entry in the Leatherman Library of Hymnody (LLOH).Features of the series include:•Intermediate 2-page arrangements suitable as either piano or organ solos.•Chord symbols included as a service to classical guitarists.•Lyrics included (and occasionally updated) to facilitate congregational singing or vocal solo.•Hymn background information included for personal edification or use as printed program notes.•Optional repeats which allow you to fit into the allotted time available in a service.•An introduction and/or tag in many cases, often incorporating a classical excerpt or related hymn fragment. From the early days of Christianity, hymns have been used successfully to reinforce and spread doctrine and faith. Scholars point out a number of hymn fragments in the New Testament. For example, 1 Timothy 3:16:          He appeared in a body,           Was vindicated by the Spirit,               Was seen by angels,       Was preached among the nations,           Was believed on in the world,               Was taken up into glory. The metrical patterns made memorization of creeds easier, especially when associated with a melody.Sing, My Tongue, the Glorious Battle is a great example of an early hymn written to codify Christology (the theology of Jesus Christ), covering his birth to his death, and then ending–as many hymns did–with a doxological stanza. If I were still planning worship services, I would be intrigued by the idea of making this hymn the outline of a Lenten service...perhaps interspersing scripture or other narration between stanzas, alternating between choir and congregation, and varying the accompanying instrumental textures. If you like this format, you may be interested in a published volume of 75 similar arrangements: BEST-LOVED HYMNS I  (© FJH Music, distributed by Alfred Music).************It has long been my passion and privilege to create customized arrangements for the churches and schools with whom I have been associated. Many were published; some were not. During the 2020 slowdown caused by Covid-19, I finally had the time to start posting the unpublished resources on Sheet Music Plus. Double Bass,Drum Set - Level 3 - Interactive Download SKU: A0.1297026 By Joe Henderson. By Horace Silver. Arranged by Horace Silver. This edition: Interactive Download. Jazz. 37 pages. Duration 355. George Kaplan #C5SAErxqDpwnfFE1mI7uF. Published by George Kaplan (A0.1297026). Key: Db major. This is a note-for-note transcription of the October 31, 1963 trio recording of Horace Silver’s tune Que Pasa. It is notated for piano, bass and drums, although the bass is a three-note figure that hardly ever varies. For his improvisations, Horace employed a call-and-response pattern between his two hands, with little overlap. This means that the solo pianist can play the string bass part with her left hand while handling both piano staves with her right. Horace observed, “We never used this trio version but I really like this earlier version. I approached it differently in that I didn’t always resolve it when I was improvising. It’s different and I like it.†See bar 67 for an example of his reluctance to resolve. To create Que Pasa, Horace took the first line of Gershwin's Nice Work If You Can Get It (“Holding hands at midnightâ€) and put a samba bassline underneath. It is written in the theoretical key of Db minor, together with the non-diatonic chords G13 and F13. The tune stayed in his bandbook for the next three years and has become something of a mini-standard over the years.

Bass Flute,Instrumental Solo,Piano - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.548712 Composed by Martin Luther. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Easter,Instructional,Standards. Score and individual part. 4 pages. Jmsgu3 #3411731. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.548712). Out of the Depths I Cry to You by Martin Luther arranged for bass flute & piano. The first verses feature modified counterpoint and harmony proceeding at quarter = 82. The final verse is reharmonized for maximum dramatic effect at a more contemplative tempo such as quarter = 64. Features the entire range of the instrument. Very powerful selection for Lent or Easter. Duration (3 verses) 3:05, 36 ms. Score: 3 pg. Solo part: 1 pg. The piano reads from the score. Out of the Depths Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir (From deep affliction I cry out to you), is, of course, a hymn composed by Martin Luther. Moreover, Luther also wrote the lyrics, essentially a paraphrase of Psalm 130. First published in 1524, it is also one of eight songs in the original Lutheran hymnal. It appears likewise in many hymnals and in different translations. The lyrics furthermore stimulated compositions from the Renaissance to the contemporary. Consequently, composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach built an entire chorale cantata on it. Other composers similarly contributed pieces, such as Felix Mendelssohn and Max Reger. Luther Background Martin Luther, (1483 –1546) was a German professor of theology, composer, priest, and moreover, an influential character in the Protestant Reformation. Luther had a momentous impact on church and society due to his contributions to the musical arts. He wanted to disseminate the gospel among mankind and with this intention thought that the best way to do that was through music. Influence It is important to realize that other musicians, and their descendants, were encouraged by Luther’s songs and wrote their own hymns. Luther, to be sure, had a thorough musical education. For example, he knew secular and sacred songs from an early age. He, in particular, played the lute well and sang in the monastery when he was a monk. That is to say, music was an essential part of his life. He in fact first began writing songs in 1523, sometimes writing the melody as well as the lyrics. Luther was certainly able to evaluate the composers of his time. He thought especially highly of Josquin des and Ludwig Senfl. He was also acquainted, with this in mind, with other composers and their works. Legacy The Lutheran musical ethos soon covered all of Germany and later significantly fashioned Protestant musical culture. Heinrich Schütz and Johann Sebastian Bach are the most compelling evidence of this Protestant musical culture. Additionally, as a point often overlooked, the pedal organ, first refined in northern Germany, became universally prevalent. As a matter of fact, Dieterich Buxtehude established a regular evening organ concert series in Lübeck. Another key point is that this concert series, in turn, spread North German Musical ideas worldwide. Luther was especially convinced that music is a beautiful and exclusive offering of the divine.

Piano Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.778629 Composed by Don Hodell Chilcote. Arranged by Don Hodell Chilcote. Christian,Gospel,Jazz,Sacred. Score. 4 pages. Don Hodell Chilcote #482987. Published by Don Hodell Chilcote (A0.778629). Sing Hallelujah is a funky composition with bebop melodies. Simple and groovin at times and also harmonically daring and rich with great resonance. Big Chords and great nonfunctional Gospel sounding voice leading produces a striking example of the beauty qualities of this astounding gem. Piece includes multiple distinct and unique themes and developments before concluding. 3 page arrangement is challenging but not overly so, and well worth the effort to learn. Deeply funky tune draws from inspiration in Hezekiah Walker, Chick Corea, Ricky Dillard, Charlie Parker, and Theolonious Monk. It was used for a piano and drum prelude in church, for a moment in time.
