He initially received violin lessons and discovered his talent for trombone playing at the age of twelve. He eventually settled in Leipzig and became a member of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra as well as a teacher at the Royal Conservatory of Music. He wrote the School for Trombone in 1902. (Wikipedia) The School for Trombone (part of our Vintage Brass Series, not to be confused with the Technical Etudes) is a very detailed and comprehensive book in three volumes totalling 208 pages, the text being divided into German, English and Russian languages. • Volume I includes detailed lessons on music theory including all scales and keys, rhythm, time signatures, rests, accents, accidentals, explanations of tempo markings, dynamics, posture, tone, a table of positions and notes. The lessons go through different keys starting very slowly and methodically with short exercises....not going too fast for the beginning student. Along the way Mueller inserts easy duets to perform with teacher and student, including many Bach chorales, etc. to get tuning and tone solidified.  • Volume II for the intermediate level student, begins with the first studies of slurs and legato. He introduces simple songs and famous melodies including more duets. Even more, He also attended the St. Petersburg Conservatory. There he studied music theory with Nikolai Zaremba. He also consequently studied composition with Anton Rubenstein. It seems like Rubenstein came under criticism from a group of Russian composers known as the Five. The Five The Five certainly rejected Western musical influences. They rather sought to use elements from Russian music. They furthermore wanted to use more exotic musical materials. Western Techniques More than other Russian composers, Tchaikovsky studied modern Western music. He certainly develops his music like the European masters. So, rather than repeating a motive, he moves to a new key. He then introduces a different theme in the new key. Hence, he maintained his independence from the Five. Even more, he became the first Russian composer of international stature. Influences Tchaikovsky was probably influenced in his ballet scoring by Léo Delibes. Richard Wagner influenced his symphonic writing. Tchaikovsky’s most famous works include the 1812 Overture, The Nutcracker Suite, and Swan Lake. Also famous are the Violin Concerto in D and the six symphonies. The greatest of the six symphonies may be No. 6, the Pathétique. Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a The Nutcracker Suite is a ballet that was performed for the first time in December 1892 in St. Petersburg. To begin with, the original ballet failed to attract a positive reception. However, the ballet suite became probably one of the most popular of all of Tchaikovsky’s works. The ballet suite became even more famous in the 1960s. It is now performed all over the world, particularly during the Christmas season.

Also, since all seven are used in the key of C major, this study/etude allows someone to quickly memorize how modes work. The modes are diffucult to memorize because of their foreign names. This makes this piece have great replay value since it will take a few run throughs to memorize them. Tips:1. Each mode has one special note. It is a great exercise to figure them out. For example, the B natural in D dorian sections is the special note. This B natural should have been a Bb in the key of regular D minor.2. This piece is a good example of what I like to call half step gravity. For example, in measure 12, the B has more gravity to go to C than A because C is closer. B to C would be a half step. B to A would be a whole step.3. This piece is a good example of bass notes setting the tone and vibe. I invite performers to change the bass notes to see what I mean. For example, a constant C bass note would lead to a problem free sound, whereas a constant B bass note leads to a more uncomfortable metal music sound.4. This piece is a good example of how we hear a chord from the bass note on up. For example, an E minor chord with a B in the bass might actually function more like a B7 with suspended notes.5. This piece is a good example of a perfect authentic cadence (PAC) with a final A minor chord tonic (home) chord with an A in the bass and soprano voices.

He was far more gifted with prose than I, so I’ll him explain further:We shall not be surprised to find that [colours’] effects are at all times decided and significant, and that they are immediately associated with the emotions of the mind.Colour, considered as an element of art, may be made subservient to the highest aesthetical needs.General impressions produced by single colours cannot be changed[.] They act specifically and must produce definite, specific states in the living organ. Experience teaches us that particular colours excite particular states of feeling.Goethe goes on to detail these notions in an elaborate, deeply imaginative treatise. Sadly for him, this work was coming out just as the science of optics had begun to give the world an empirical understanding of color, leaving Goethe’s romantic ideas in the margins.But it is those ideas that I find intriguing from a poetic viewpoint, and, in this composition, I shed musical light unto his dramatic descriptions of several different colors.“Yellow-Red� is described as “primordial, impetuous, robust,� to the point of eliciting “extreme excitement� which disturbs and enrages even animals!“Yellow� is portrayed as that being nearest to natural light. It is of “utmost purity and beauty[….] Serene, gay, softly exciting.�The color “Red-Blue� we are told is “something lively without gladness.�“Blue� is steeped in darkness, a “contradiction between excitement and repose.� It gives one the “impression of cold.� and brings to mind melancholy.
