SKU: A0.549392

Composed by George Frideric Handel. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Baroque,Sacred,Standards,Wedding. Score and part. 9 pages. Jmsgu3 #3492565. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549392).

Duration: 4:55, Score: 6 pages, Solo part: 1 page, piano part: 2 pages. A very famous aria (Ombra mai fu) from Xerxes
Suitable for any venue requiring meditative music. Excellent choice for a recital encore.

Xerxes

Xerxes is, in fact, an opera seria in three acts by Handel. Moreover, Handel conducted the premiere performance in London in 1738. Handel casts the opera in Persia in 470 BC. The part of Xerxes was indeed originally sung by a soprano castrato. Nowadays, the part is generally sung by a mezzo-soprano or conversely a counter-tenor. In the first place, Xerxes sings an opening aria, Ombra mai fu to a plane tree. Handel sets this aria to one of his most truly famous melodies. Although many refer to it traditionally as Handel’s Largo, Handel has, on the contrary, clearly marked Larghetto in the score.

Handel Background

George Frideric Handel (1685 - 1759) was born in Germany but eventually became a British citizen. Nonetheless, he was a famous Baroque composer. In fact, he became famous for his operas, oratorios, anthems, and organ concertos. Handel studied music and, by and large, worked as a composer in Germany and Italy before moving to London. On the whole, Handel was very familiar with the contemporary music of Italy and Germany.

Career in England

It is essential to realize that Italian opera was all the rage in England at the time. Moreover, Handel was really good at writing them. Therefore, he started not one but three opera companies in England. Alexander's Feast was a huge success in 1736, but Handel began composing English choral works. After success with the Messiah in 1742) he certainly never again wrote an Italian opera.

Consequently, he died in 1759, a treasured genius. Accordingly, the English government gave him full state honors at his funeral. Hence, he is buried in Westminster Abbey in London.

Legacy

Music historians agree that Handel was in general one of the greatest composers of the Baroque era.  To demonstrate, his works such as the Messiah, Water Music, and Music for the Royal Fireworks remain consistently popular up to the present time. He especially composed the coronation anthem, Zadok the Priest for the coronation of George II. Nevertheless, it has specifically been performed at every succeeding British coronation since. His oratorio Solomon has by all means also continued to be prevalent. As a matter of fact, Sinfonia from act 3 was featured the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony. Handel was particularly prolific. To enumerate, he wrote over forty operas.  Since the late 1960s, we have expressly experienced a revival of baroque music. Similarly, we have especially seen a pique of interest in historically informed musical performances. Since his death in 1779, interest in Handel's music has all in all, expanded.

Chord chart with horn cues for the band leader, and parts for Alto and Tenor Sax, Trumpet in Bb and Trombone (not all parts need to be covered to make an effective horn section). These charts are intended for use in function bands where the band leader can call the arrangements on the fly, therefore exact structures are not always fully represented, but often indicated through general verbal instructions. Used in real life with my function band, the staff size is great for low-light situations on paper or for displaying on a tablet smaller than A4.

SKU: A0.1151657

Composed by George Frideric Handel. Arranged by Adrian Gagiu. Baroque,Chamber. 60 pages. Adrian Gagiu #751852. Published by Adrian Gagiu (A0.1151657).

Handel’s great set of 12 Concerti grossi (= Grand Concertos, in the first edition) op. 6 are somehow a bit related in spirit, through their power and diversity, with Beethoven’s string quartets. Therefore, here they are arranged for the more ‘abstract’ and ‘timeless’ medium of the string quartet, allowing also for an addition to the repertoire of the respective ensembles. Articulation, tempo and dynamics indications were specified or added where needed, and all the trills were indicated to start with the upper auxiliary note, not only according to the Baroque performance practice but also fitting to the melodic contour. Concerto grosso in D major, op. 6 no. 5: 1. Larghetto-Allegro – majestic introduction and a vigorous fugato; 2. Presto – humorous and surprising; 3. Largo – nostalgic, in the style of Corelli; 4. Allegro vivace – even more humorous, brilliant, high-spirited and driven (and also evoking D. Scarlatti and Telemann); 5. Menuet (Un poco larghetto) – appeased and varied. Total duration 15 min. The mp3 audio clip is the first movement. Performing Rights Organization: SOCAN.

Composed by Eduard Puetz. Arranged by Wolfgang Birtel. This edition: Sheet music. Edition Schott - Single Edition. Downloadable. Schott Music - Digital #Q11844. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q11844).

Overcoming the boundaries between 'serious' and entertaining music was what mattered to the musician Eduard Pütz (1911–2000). His compositions therefore include stylistic features of jazz and pop music. Many of his works were written for children and young instrumentalists to offer them a break from the monotony of classical sonatinas and studies. 'Blue Waltz' is such a treat – very easy to play, it carefully helps the player to open a listening ear for jazz sounds. The arrangement for accompanied melodic instrument is also suitable for beginner's lessons and the first ensemble playing.

Cello Solo - Level 2 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.800199

Composed by Ramin Djawadi. Arranged by Samantha J Bramley - stringspirational@gmail.com. Film/TV. Individual part. 14 pages. Samantha Bramley #3487921. Published by Samantha Bramley (A0.800199).

A tribute to the hugely popular opening title track of Game of Thrones, arranged for 5 'cellos. Lasting only 1 and a half minutes, this would make a great encore for a 'cello ensemble concert and is a great showcase for the versatility of the 'cello.

Some tenor clef, some simple double stopping (in fifths), and with an exciting col legno opening, this is a very accessible arrangement for most ensembles of intermediate ability. If played by a 'cello orchestra (rather than 5 individual 'cellists) parts 1 and 4 should be solo in bars 9 - 24 only. All other parts are tutti throughout. Dynamics should be varied accordingly.

Note from the arranger: All my arrangements for 'cello quartet, quintet and sextet are conceived specifically with the range and technical capabilities of the 'cello in mind - no simple transpositions or re-orchestrations of string quartet scores. They are therefore both easily playable and enjoyable by any intermediate to advanced 'cello ensemble. Most parts do not go beyond 4th position, making them equally suitable for student, mixed ability groups or ‘cello choirs. A complete score and set of individual parts is included - enjoy!

Keep Calm & Play 'Cello!

SKU: A0.1392100

Composed by Mauro Giuliani (1781-1829). Arranged by Socrates Arvanitakis. Classical. Individual part. 19 pages. Socrates Arvanitakis #975591. Published by Socrates Arvanitakis (A0.1392100).

PREFACE AND BRIEF ANALYTICAL NOTES

The three sonatinas op.71 by Mauro Giuliani in C, G, and D were first published in 1816 in Vienna and were intended as student pieces of progressive difficulty. In parallel with this intention they are also fully developed three-movement works which reveal Giulianiâ??s technique as a composer with harmony, counterpoint, and structure.
They certainly have the time length and the variety of full scale sonatas, but here Giuliani has chosen to use the supporting structures of sonatas met in movements other than the first, such as Menuetto and Trio, Rondo, Marcia and Trio, Scherzo and Trio, etc,  rather than sonata form itself.

As it stands, this first sonatina in C has the following three movements:

1 Maestoso (Moderato) which is a set of a theme and three variations, or better termed as a set of mathematical divisions reminiscent of an earlier era, as the accompaniment of the theme is given in crotchets, quavers, quaver triplets, and semi-quavers.
2 Menuetto-Trio-Menuetto da capo written typically in the subdominant key of F and fully developed as per classical 19th century usage.
3 Rondo. This movement is also written in a classical rondo style and form as an A-B-A-C-B-A-codetta  structure, with a typical tonal scheme of A in the tonic Key (C), B in the dominant key (G), and C in the relative minor key (Am).

Therefore in this work we do not meet with structural innovations of any kind, but with strong affirmation of already existing and well established early 19th century structural norms, but the beautiful personal melodic and harmonic style of Giuliani and even his routine guitaristic nuances and formulas are present in all three movements and can be enjoyed as always.

Composed by Brett L. Wery. Concert,Contemporary. Score and parts. 38 pages. Sonata Grendel Publishing #5741825. Published by Sonata Grendel Publishing (A0.837493).

Making the Darkness Conscious was commissioned by my friend, Jonathan Hulting-Cohen. Jonathan is the Professor of Saxophone at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He is an amazing artist and a technical wizard. The piece was premiered in its original version as a solo for tenor saxophone and wind ensemble. The present version for piano is not intended to be a reduction of the wind ensemble accompaniment but is a reworking of the piece as an addition to the saxophone/piano duo repertoire.

The anti-heroes in film, TV, and literature who feel themselves pushed to do very bad things for very noble reasons inspired this sonata in one movement. These characters often are themselves corrupted by their efforts.  One trope of scripted television anti-hero vehicles like Breaking Bad is the cold opening presented out of sequence. The main character is shown in the moment of highest tension or deepest desperation then the story backs up to explain the events that led to that moment. Making the Darkness Conscious uses the same device by starting with a mysterious, disoriented setting full of strange groans and weird echoes. The scene ends in a terrified scream and cuts directly to a happier, jolly portrayal of the solo tenor saxophone’s character. By the end of the piece, the soloist’s character is transformed into something more ruthless and tortured.

One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious. The latter procedure, however, is disagreeable and therefore not popular.

C.G. Jung
