By Mike Strand, ASCAP This is a lead sheet for a jazz combo or ensemble, a good basis for a variety of arrangements, improvisations, or contrafacts. The audio sample is my melody from Finale PrintMusic, combined with an iReal Pro swing accompaniment. I’ve designated the melody for solo violin, an instrument that I would like to see and hear more often in jazz ensembles.  You will hear a violin carry the melody in the audio sample. Playing the solo on violin solves a possible difficulty in performance. Problem:  This piece may be too challenging for many wind instrument players (brass, woodwind). Solution:  This piece is well suited to a non-wind instrument player!  Violin springs to mind. Violin is especially appropriate here:  This tune has lots of notes; similar to a solo violin partita prelude or up-tempo dance movement by J. S. Bach.  A wind instrument player told me that finding spots for taking a breath was a challenge. This is not to discourage wind players from experimenting with the piece, adjusting it in places if necessary.  A wind player may include more breathing spots for relief in his or her improvisation! Note for composers:  I adapted this piece from the 5th (swing) movement of my Partita II, for solo violin, also for sale on this site.

Published by Will Corbin (A0.1461282). This is truly international music: written by a Dane in the style of an Argentinian tango with a French title, which means jealousy. (Its complete original name is Jalousie 'Tango Tzigane' (Jealousy Gypsy Tango).The piece was written in 1925 but first recorded 10 years later by the Boston Pops Orchestra under the direction of the beloved Arthur Fiedler.Thanks to the Danish National Symphony, whose version of the song provided inspiration for many of the licks in this arrangement.This is scored with a baritone instead of trombone (for the gentler touch), but I've also attached a trombone part. The song was passed over for both the White Album and Abbey Road, so, after the Beatles broke up, McCartney included it on his self-titled first solo album. That record also included a singalong version of Junk, which is approximately what this would be.This is more elevator music, definitely useful for when the band is not necessarily the center of attention.It's scored for baritone instead of trombone. For Soprano, Flute, Cello and Piano --Composed in 2014 --Poem by Delmira Augustini Amor is a poem by Delmira Agustini, considered to be the most important female Latin American poet of the early 20th century. She was born in Uruguay and was the daughter of Italian immigrants. She was murdered by her ex-husband at the age of 27. The poem is in three stanzas and the music follows the form. The instrumental refrain opens the piece, ends the piece, and is performed between stanzas. The instruments play overlapping patterns of different durations that hover around a major 2nd interval of F and E-flat, and simple chords created by these two pitches. The verses have a rhythmically interlocking pattern between the left hand piano part and the flute. Meanwhile the cello plays a strict serial part of 5 notes and 7 duration, which cause a change in harmony against the piano and flute. The vocal melody fills in the resulting random harmonies, sometimes anticipating the chord change that results from the cello line. The effect is a dreamy kind of randomness, that evokes that mystical period between awake and dreaming. The right hand part of the piano during the verses, the knocking of the wood of the piano, came to me as an alternative to adding more notes during this section, which I preferred keeping stark, to help bring out the different melodies and resulting harmonies. This is the first time I have composed in Spanish, my adopted language which I love.

Without delving too far into the physical and scientific aspects of trumpet playing, allow me to paraphrase the great Yogi Berra;The upper register of the trumpet is the same as the middle and lower registers, just different.All trumpet playing is a coordination or balance of three things: air, tongue level and embouchure. It is through sensible, intelligent and consistent practice that we develop the skills necessary to play throughout the entire range of our instrument.Purpose Of This BookAlthough hitting the high note may be the quest for many trumpet players, a more useful and musical goal is developing a large playable range. This means being able to articulate and play musically and dynamically throughout the entire range of the instrument. This is accomplished through the use of Range Arcs, which are musical phrases that cover a large range. In addition to building our playable range, we are working on technique and adding to our jazz vocabulary.I originally developed the concept of Range Arcs in The Modern Jazz Trumpet Method. Many players have commented on how useful these studies are, so I decided to expand on it here. For more rudimentary range, flexibility and endurance study, seeTongue Level & Air.The Approach NoteI have found that how we approach the highest note of a musical phrase is critical to range development. This aspect of range development is presented here in a progressive, creative format.Exercises 1-5 use the Chromatic Approach. This means that the highest note of the arc is approached from a 1â„2 step below. The exercises continue, adding a 1â„2 step to the approach note every five exercises.Articulation & PhrasingAll exercises in this book are to be played in a swing style. However, if you are having trouble with an exercise, sometimes playing it straight may help. Jazz articulation should also be employed throughout. What does that mean exactly? Jazz trumpet articulation is as spontaneous and individual as an improvised solo. Honestly, if I have to think about it, I can’t do it. The best advice is to listen to the trumpet players quoted in this book and to as much jazz trumpet as you can. Transcribe and play solos while emulating their style and articulation.Immersing yourself in this will result in your own personal style of articulation. Jazz articulation on trumpet is also born out of necessity. Some slurs in a line may just not be possible so you must tongue. This will be revealed when you start some of the exercises that contain wider intervals.How To Use This BookEach exercise group consists of a Range Arc, Range Builder and Range Builder Extended. Each group should be practiced for at least one week before moving ahead to the next one.Range ArcsThe Range Arc is the original lick. De Dionsio para Koré is a theatrical adaptation of the poetry book of the same name, which reveals the uncontrolled love of the god Dionsio for the mortal Koré. They constantly change roles in a cycle of death and rebirth. I wrote this soundtrack in a simple way. Some actors in the cast played some instruments in a beginner way, so I wrote a simple track inspired by ancient Greek music so that everyone could act and play the soundtrack with me live. In the instrumental formation, we have guitar, flute, clarinet, cello, and drums. This is piece 1 of 6 that integrates the soundtrack. The writing of the drums must be followed rhythmically as it is written, but the pitches of the notes can vary. The most important thing is that the drums are played according to the relative height (high, medium, and low). The songs are excellent for a group of beginning students to play together and practice chamber music, as they are a repertoire of easy execution and very impressive sonority. Good studies! This arrangement is built from a barbershop arrangement found floating on the 'net from a gay men's chorus, with the four higher horns -- two trumpets, horn, trombone -- providing the quartet.
