To me this beautiful song is about how love can bring people back together even from the most painful of circumstances. In 1975, I was a student in Dr. Inglefield's Music History class at Bowling Green State University, where I was pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Composition. Dr. Inglefield arranged for me to study in Paris with Nadia Boulanger, which I did from 1975-78, making me one of her last composition students and utterly changing my life. This piece is written in gratitude for Dr. Inglefield's vision and generosity.The work is based on my own Ave Maria for SATB chorus which was commissioned in 1991 by the San Francisco male vocal ensemble Chanticleer. Each of the four variations is based on the main melody of the Ave Maria and is separated by interludes built of contrasting material, all leading to a literal statement of the motet after the fourth variation. Thus, though the piece is largely intended for use in solo recitals, it could be played as part of a liturgical service where the motet is also sung. I am grateful to Sonja Inglefield for her expert and detailed editing of the score. Harpists Steve Main and Michael Rado also offered valuable suggestions. -David Conte.

The piece was written in 1713 and is part of the cantata Was mir behagt, ist nur die muntre Jagd, BWV 208. The cantata's title translates The lively hunt is all my heart's desire, and it is also known as the Hunting Cantata.  Like the same composer´s Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, it is frequently played at weddings.[1] However, it was originally written for a birthday celebration, that of Christian, Duke of SaxeWeissenfels. Bach was based at the nearby court of Weimar, and musicians from both courts appear to have joined together in the first performance in Weißenfels. Bach is known to have used the music again for other celebrations, but it remained unpublished until after his death. Obviously one good have drums, bass and other instrumentation but I think the feel of the song would best come across with solo piano. The lyric are directly taken from scripture; namely Psalm 96 KJV. The lyrics don't follow the order of the psalm verses and is effectively jumps around the psalm. (The Finns possess an overabundance of vowels.) And it was the theme for the gangstger character Brick Top in the wonderfully weird 200 flick Snatch.But it's a wonderful tango by Jerry Ross when you take away the words.If you need alternative instrumentation, I'm happy to accommodate.
