A friend of Adolphe Sax, his works for the saxophone are among the first for this instrument. In addition to three fantasies for alto saxophone and piano, Savari wrote a series of ensembles which go from duo to octet. His works were published by Sax between 1861 and 1862. He died in 1870. This work is in four main sections, a slow introduction with a final cadenza, an original Waltz theme with a variation, an Andante section based on the Waltz theme and a bolero which, after short reprise of the waltz theme, ends with a brilliant coda.

St. Matthew Blue contains unusual harmonies inspired by J. S. Bach’s opening chorus to the St. Matthew Passion. This tune doesn't match the profundity and appeal of Bach's chorus, but the two 16-bar themes of St. Matthew Blue contain some of my favorite harmonic ideas from Bach’s work.
