The Composer's Story:After packing and getting ready for a trip that would take me out of the country for the first time ever, I slowly passed the piano in the living room. Pausing, I sat down to play one more time before I departed. At that point, I did not know how many months or years it would be until I had the blessing of playing the piano again. Feeling the smooth keys, I started to play this melody. As I added in the arpeggiating left hand, this piece became the bittersweet goodbye at that point in my life. It was a softly falling snow, and inspired me to write this piece.Play as smoothly as you can throughout the whole piece. Make sure you count very carefully in measure 21 and 22; the rhythms might surprise you. Also pay close attention to how the music is slurred. When you tongue, do so gently. The more you can help others imagine a quiet day with snow falling slowly and gently, the better. Nowhere in this piece should you play very loudly – even the mezzo forte sections should be on the softer side.Time: ca. 1:30Range: Bb2-C4Key: Bb MajorTime Signature: 4/4I would generally use this piece with a solid first year bassoon student transferring from another instrument, or a second year bassoonist. There are a couple places where flicking up to Bb is advised. Other technical considerations are moving between D and Eb, and F and G. There are also a few rhythmic challenges such as eighth to dotted quarter, and eighth note and two sixteenths.Once the student has purchased this piece, an adjudicator’s copy may be made. As it is such a popular hit I was surprised to find that the original was by Bob Dylan, from the album ‘Time out of Mind’ from 1997, and also that it has been covered many times by different artists.Why choose my arrangement?I have arranged the piano part to follow the original very closely, transposed into G Major, as I also want to be able to play it in gigs with my daughter who is a singer. As such I have made the piano part to lie under the fingers, making sure the clefs are easy to read. I have also included a ‘piano only’ score as it falls onto three pages, and is convenient for performing, as well as the two piano scores with each violin version.Some of the harmony is slightly changed, and I composed my own bridge passage with hints at the original. Also Adele sings a quite dissonant G in the melody, against the F sharps in some of the verses. Personally I love this, but it would need to be played subtly, and the clash is less obvious in the less dense sonority of a vocal part, so I have left this option open by notating the safer version, and suggesting the dissonance rather than the other way around. On the video is an example of both.I also include a bonus ‘Easy Violin’ Part that younger players will enjoy, or perhaps the pupils of those who buy the professional level arrangement. It requires some simple shifts in the Chorus and Bridge section. However, there are some places where an open ‘A’ could slip by unobtrusively in quaver passages too. Feel free to take as many bows as you need and don’t feel bound by my bowing suggestions. I have changed my mind many times! Just do what feels comfortable and enjoy it. Some places I have left out bowing altogether eg Bar 27 where you can experiment or discuss with your teacher.Adele sings the original at 72 bpm but I think you could certainly go as high as 76 bpm without losing that mournful quality, and it will help young players with their bowing.My Youtube Channel has many of my arrangements for String Quartet, recorded by the Worcestershire, UK ‘Capriccio Quartet’, as well as many songs for instrument and piano. The composer and harpsichordist Anne-Louise Brillon de Jouy was born in Paris in 1744, and died in 1824 in Villers-sur-Mer in Normandie. She married Jacques Brillon de Jouy 22 years her senior,and had two daughters, Cunégonde and Aldegonde, Anne-Louise Brillon de Jouy had a salon in Passy whose guests included the violinist Jean-Pierre Pagin and cellist and composer Luigi Boccherini. Benjamin Franklin was also a frequent vistor and Madame Brillon has an extensive correspondence with him, including the period after his stay in Paris during the American Revolution .Many of her compositions were purchased in 1957 by the American Philosophical Society of Philadelphia, in honor of this friendship.In 2021, French Pianist Nicolas Horvath recorded a landmark CD for Grand Piano (GP872-73) of Brillon’s keyboard noatas with extensive notes by Aliette de Laleu, Deborah Hayes and Nicolas Horvath and Christine de Pas The keyboard sonatas published here are intended to document this reocrding.The twelve numbered sonatas, marked “Troisième Recueil de Sonates pour le pianoforte ou clavecin avec accompagnement d’un viiolon ad libitumâ€�, are in the hand of a copyist and are contained in a bound volume labeled as her Troisième Recueil (‘Third Collection’) and dedicated to Mesdemoiselles Brillon. Evidently the composer at some point chose these 12 sonatas to be copied as a sampling of her work for her two daughters. The manuscript is in the collection of the American Philosopical Society in Philadelphia.   The Sonata no. 2 in Bb major is in two movements: Allegro malto moderato and Rondo with variations. Both of these movements utilse many passages with hand-crossings.
