It starts with a romantic melody played by both violin and cello, followed by a more energetic rhythmic piece reminiscent of eastern European music, followed by a 5/4 passage similar to Turkish music, followed by a rhythmic section representing India, and ending with a melodic in pentatonic scale representing China. The last is the melody in my composition, Theme and Variations for Er Hu (2-string Chinese violin) and Orchestra. The whole journey takes about 6 minutes. An elderly cello-playing friend assured me that the rapidly moving pizzicatos were quite playable. The audio clip is computer playback.

This pieces is an entry way for the classical oboist into popular American rhythms and style and is a crowd favorite! The solo part appears to be very technical but does not push the boundaries of unnecessary virtuosity. The part stays in an accessible range for intermediate/advanced players. The work was inspired largely by my infant son, who reminded me when we lose our sense of curiosity in the world, we grow old. This high-energy work contains a simple motive in which all the thematic material is inspired from. A softer, more melodic middle section is lead by a longer theme. The work concludes with the original motive building in intensity until it reaches the climatic ending. Each part is carefully written to give each musician an energetic part, yet also with consideration to the instrument's nature.

Although it is short at one and a half minutes, it uses a number of musical devices to make it seem larger. Besides a piano part, it has chords for a stringed instrument such as guitar or mandolin. If you really want to add some flavor to it, the top line of the piano part could be played by a recorder, penny whistle, etc. whenever there is no one singing. We first published the complete Introduction, Theme and Variations for Euphonium in 1991 and performed it on a 1830s ophicleide and a 1840s square piano in 1993. This edition comes with a shortened introduction,theme and variations. Duration around 8 ½ min. Solo part in treble and bass clef.Message from Sean Brennan:This arrangement, or more correctly transcription, was first published by us in 1991, although its origins go back much further than that. I do remember being transfixed in the 1970s by Richard Stoltzman’s recording of the original form of the work for clarinet and orchestra. I was convinced it would work for Euphonium and that one day there would be players with the technique, and above all musicality, to bring it off. For me, this vision came true in 1994 when we first performed the piece in Birmingham in 2004, and then again 10 years later when David Thornton and the Black Dyke Band recorded the Theme and Variations. Rossini composed the Introduction, Theme and Variations for clarinet and orchestra in 1810 at the request of a fellow student at the Conservatorio di Bologna. Although the autograph score has been lost, and some musicologists have questioned the authenticity of the work, I find no reason for doubt since Rossini recycled some of the material in later works, and apart from that his evervascent musical personality is abundant from beginning to end.

It was in the process of preparing the publication of the works of Demersseman and of Ali Ben Sou Alle that suggested to me the idea of the typical 19th century practice of the Fantasy and Variations on well-known themes.The saxophone lends itself perfectly for this stylistic exercise. I therefore chose to write for this instrument, which the piano supports seriously.My republican roots (in the French sense) suggested that I set several revolutionary songs from 1789. I therefore chose the emblematic “ Ah ça ira ! �, after having seen the famous sequence of “Si Versailles l’était conté� where Piaf sings this song hanging of the grill of the Palace of Versailles, in the superbe version by Jean Françaix.I added at the end “ La Carmagnole � and the famous “ Il pleut bergère � a foreshadowing of the destiny of Marie-Antoinette who is said to have enjoyed singing this air. One will find, a bit hidden, a short citation of a work for organ by Bach.This isn’t a pastiche but rather a sort of modern update to this form in respecting its codes, its forms of this type of work which disappeared temporarily due to forced musical austerity.
