His latest creative thinking brought life to this composition. He brings out a special life to the forest when a different voice is been created through his guitars. When he asked me to compose Steve’s Mythical Forest he described it as …a walk to a forest where one finds a guitar and then picks it up and plays a tune... So, in this mythical forest I found the sounds at the same spots where the guitar maker transforms simple elements to a ‘magical wand’. And that is only a beginning… The work describes, in very simple tonal language, a small stroll in a forest at the end of the day and at the beginning of the night where sounds melting together in loving feelings and passionate desires for life.   Apostolos Paraskevas. 2021

The use of original material (reminiscent of a bell peal) establishes an ethereal quality, especially when played with mallets while the bells are suspended in the air. LV, swing, and echo are additional techniques used to help sustain the beauty, and add variety to this work. All of this effectively supports the hymn text, which begins with the lone, wild bird in lofty flight is still with you, nor leaves your sight. And I am yours! I rest in you, Great Spirit, come, rest in me, too. With the alternate title, The Hills Are Bare at Bethlehem, the piece may also be used during the Christmas season.

This work is a representation of my experimentation with 20th-century harmonies and scales, as noted by Vincent Persichetti in his book Twentieth-Century Harmony. Through this process, I worked to combine aspects of these harmonic ideas with my own voice and focus on harmonic color and nature. Combining the harmonic tendencies of the 20th-century with my own harmonic language, and connecting them through digestible melodies led me to Resonance and Flow, a work that also capitalizes on the nature of the wind quintet's aural characteristics. The wind quintet can be equally homogenous or heterogeneous in timbre, and these can change based on combinations and roles of the instruments. In playing with all of these tools, Resonance and Flow is a representation of 20th-century music with a 21st-century attunement to the audience and their taste.

Beginning dramatically with a driving rhythmic sequence in the Trombone and Tuba and bold responses from the remaining brass, the music soon transforms to the more subtle Voca Me Benedictus featuring the French Horn and Trombone. Rolling rhythms in 6/8 meter are reminiscent of the flowing movements of the sea. Shimmering sun on water is suggested by high-pitched woodwind figures. The ebb and flow of the sea is brought to mind by rising and falling musical phrase. The second section is a playful dance written in 7/8 meter. All the instruments get a chance to play the uplifting melody.
