I have been living in Sweden since 2014, so to me it felt natural to use a Swedish title :)This composition wants to express a journey feeling, through landscapes and through our inner soul. It is approximately 5 minutes long and is the 2nd movement of a suite for violin and orchestra called Ales Stenar, which is structured in 5 movements. The orchestration requires, as a minimum, the following instruments: 1 solo violin, 1 first violin, 1 second violin, 1 viola, 1 cello, 1 double bass, 1 oboe, 1 clarinet in B-flat, 1 bassoon. Upon request I can arrange the score for a bigger ensemble.The solo violin player should be a skilled one - though difficulties are not extreme - and someone who is able to deliver emotions. Among the orchestra players it would be wise to have a skilled bassoonist. In movement one, the original carol melody is changed to half notes and is turned into a three voice canon. The overall effect of movement one is the feeling of three mystics and their camels journeying in a foreign land. At the very end of movement one is one exact phrase from the original piece. In movement two, the melody is used in retrograde to create new melodic material. It is a slow movement. To me, it is reminiscent of the music of Satie or Chopin. In movement three, the new melodic material is created by taking the original melody and inverting it. In the development section, phrases from the original melody do appear. The last two measures also contain an exact quote from the original melody. It is an upbeat, fast paced movement.
