But having just one guitar means that the inner voice sometimes runs out of steam, and the bass voice jumps around from one octave to another. It always left me feeling there was a bit more music to be had amongst the notes.My arrangement, for 4 intermediate players (some of the parts are a little easier) is in a different key entirely. Spreading the workload allows a little more action to go on under the tune.Guitar 4 is 6=D, and it’s also supplied in bass clef (for a normally tuned contra guitar or similar). Either or both lines can be played.Although this can be played in swing (shuffle) rhythm, a straight rhythm allows a more relaxed and romantic feel to the piece, but feel free to try either...I hope you enjoy playing this piece!This is one of a large and growing range of accessible ensembles from experienced arranger Derek Hasted, and is supplied as full score and parts. I first wrote a five-part vocal to be sung by the group Five By Design (of which I was a member) back in the late 1990s or early 2000s. Unfortunately, it never found its way in to our repertoire. It sat on my computer for quite a few years before I revised it to be sung as a trio with my brother, Kurt, and his wife, Lorie. I had written a vocal arrangement of the carol for us to sing at some Christmas concerts and a few years later, when putting this album together, I returned to the first chart and adapted it for piano solo. The meter of the song moves back and forth between 3/4 and 2/4 and conveys the joy and hopefulness of the opening lyrics: “He is born, the Divine Child, Play the oboe, resound the bagpipes. He is born, the Divine Child, Let us all sing of his arrival.� It is this combination of instruments that I tried to emulate in the introduction, with the bagpipes in the left hand and the oboes in the right. When the tune proper begins, there is a definite rhythmic vitality that is maintained throughout the prelude as it celebrates the long-awaited birth of Jesus as foretold by the prophets over 4,000 years ago. From start to finish, the influence of both George Winston and Mannheim Steamroller can be heard in the music.

The first use of Powerhouse in a cartoon occurred in the 1943 Warner Bros., Looney Tunes short Porky Pig’s Feat, directed by Frank Tashlin. Also in 1943, it was used in the Private Snafu shorts Gripes, Spies, and Rumors. It was subsequently featured in over 40 other Warner Bros. cartoons. The most well-known assembly-line usage of Powerhouse B occurs in Bob Clampett’s Baby Bottleneck (1946), in which newborn babies (of various species) are processed on a conveyor belt in time to the melody. It was her husband, Astley Jones, who asked me to write the piece as a way of showing her how much we all loved her! I thought that was the sweetest thing and the rest is history!We hoped to give this piece its world premiere at some point in 2018 or 2019, with Jane herself playing the bassoon and myself on clarinet. However, the first major hurdle was Jane having an operation on each hand to cure her Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, and the second big hurdle was Covid-19! Due to life’s normal pressures, the work still awaits its long awaited for premiere.It has three movements, fast, slow, fast, and a total duration of approximately 15 minutes.I have also transcribed the bassoon part for bass clarinet so the piece can be played by either combination. It could even be played by two bass clarinets, which would be hilarious!I feel, as a player myself, that its main challenge is in sheer breathing and playing stamina as it certainly gets you working up a sweat by the end, but its comical, quirky character will hopefully make it great fun for players and audience alike.
