These five traditional Celtic folksongs are among the best known and best loved of all folk music. Ar Hyd Y Nos (All Through The Night), first published in 1784 in Edward Jones's anthology of folk songs,  Musical and Poetical Relics of the Welsh Bards, became one of the most popular hymns in the English-speaking world. A popular Christmas song, All Through the Night also appears in numerous films and stage productions, beginning with John Gay's opera of 1728 and up to the present day. Calon Lân (a pure heart), a traditional Celtic tune with lyrics later written by Daniel James (Gwyrosydd) in the 1890s, has become the anthem of the Welsh Rugby league. Llwyn Onn (The Ash Grove) was first published in 1892 in The Bardic Museum by harpist Edward Jones. In its English version, with words written by poet Thomas Oliphant, it is traditionally sung in America on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Dafydd y Gareg Wen (David of the White Rock). This song was written by David Owen, a harpist who died about 1720 at the tender age of 29. Tradition says that Owen was lying on his deathbed, and called for his harp. Too weak to hold the harp, he was helped by his wife, who held the harp upright while he played this haunting tune. Rhyfelgyrch Gwyr Harlech (Men of Harlech) describes the seven-year siege of Harlech Castle between 1461 and 1468. Commanded by Constable Dafydd ap Ieuan, the Welsh garrison withstood the longest known siege in the history of the British Isles I hope you enjoy playing this as much as I enjoyed writing it. Published by Sam Wibowo (A0.1030368). Moles is a 4 minute string quartet which roots from two main concepts: (More famously,) Bach’s and Shostakovich’s musical cryptography and Elgar’s enigma. Hence, the name of the work is something to only be understood by the composer. The main harmonic motif comes from SA(MU)E(L) (WI)B(OWO) which then equates to E-flat, A, E-natural and B-flat which enharmonically become notes of two diminished chords. This motific process has also been done for 4 other people, which is to remain unknown. The development and the interaction between each motif represent and symbolise personal stories along with its rhythmic, harmonic, and expressive aspects such as bar numbers, inversions of chosen chords, and expression markings. The harmonic material throughout the work remains unstable, struggling to find functioning consonance. On the other hand, the rhythmic framework remains fairly stable and metrically comfortable, compensating for the instability of the harmonic material. Insight into the first 19 bars: The opening can be seen to canonically imitate, stating the main harmonic motif (E-flat, A, E-natural and B-flat) throughout the 4 string instruments. Each 5 roman numerals introduce each inversion, since 4 more inversions can fit into an octave before completing the cycle. Furthermore this represents the other 4 people in the piece all linking back to me, calming the rhythmic and harmonic variety through the gradual making of the chord: E-flat, E-natural, B-flat and A.

Silent Night On the bi-centenary of its composition, my arrangement of 'Silent Night’ for string trio gives all the instruments chance to shine with melody, counter melody and harmony by turns. With few technical challenges, this musical interpretation of one of the most iconic Christmas songs is a great play for ensembles of early intermediate standard. Scored for string trio (vln/vla/vc). With optional 2nd violin for viola part. Note from the arranger: All my arrangements for strings are conceived specifically with the aim of writing interesting parts for all players. RBMusic #841560. Published by RBMusic (A0.1246889). This fanfare was written to enter the Arts Active's Fanfare Competition, in celebration of St. David's Hall 40th Birthday. In writing this piece, I researched the musical history of St. David’s Hall. Unfortunately, it has proven very difficult to find specific songs/pieces from some of the key events (the only clip I could find was the Cory Band playing John Mile’s Music), so I focused on brass bands and Wales.The pieces incorporates Men of Harlech (Rhyfelgyrch Gwŷr Harlech), Land of My Fathers (Hen Wlad fy Nhadau) and Philip Sparke’s The Year of the Dragon. Growing up with brass band, I heard Men of Harlech a lot and it has always been my “go to� Welsh piece. Land of My Fathers is the unofficial anthem of Wales. As for The Year of the Dragon, it was used both times that St. David’s Hall has hosted the European Brass Band Championships: it was used as the set test pieces in 1986 for Desford Colliery Dowty Band’s historic victory (under Howard Snell) and as the own choice test piece in 1992 as part of Britannia Building Society (now Fodens) Band’s winning performances (again under Howard Snell). The Year of the Dragon is also a popular piece of music in the brass-band world and has much significance to me personally.The name of piece comes from the GPS location of St. David’s Hall (51.48022° N, 3.17653° W), rounded to the nearest integer: the actual location of 51° N, 3° W is just off of the A378 in North Curry in Taunton, Somerset, England. The competition stipulated that the fanfare was to be composed for a maximum of five standard brass band instruments and so was written for 2 Cornets, Tenor Horn, Trombone or Euphonium and Eb Bass. An additional score and parts have been provided for a more traditional brass quintet set up.
