During the ups and downs of her two-month hospital stay, I ended most of the health update posts with the phrase, God is good....always! That is what prompted me to write this song and how I came up with this name. I hope that it will help you to turn to God in your struggles of life because God is good...always!

The text for this piece comes from one of my favorite American poets, Kenneth Patchen, who has been the inspiration for several of my compositions. The sense imagery that is illiciated from his words resonate with me. The sounds of musical waves become the bases for the piece. The women’s voices are used as the vehicles of the text while the men’s voices service as a lilting musical ebb and flow. The idea that life and love float along like petals on the ocean, blowing ashore with no ability to change anything - just along for the ride, is a powerful thought. The poet also suggests that even with a long life, our understanding of pleasure is like that of snow, fleeting and temporary. And life keeps blowing rose petals from the ocean to the land in a seemingly random but perhaps divine pattern. This piece utilizes flute and ocean drum to create the atmosphere of the coastline and waves.

In the 2nd verse, the melody is taken up by the Trombones in a very easy comfortable range. The Descant part is played in the 3rd Verse at the change of key; A flourish of Woodwind, Trumpets, and Horns finishes with a rousing climax in the final chords. A bouncing accompaniment and a simple melody line are designed to concentrate on the lyrics and bring as much character to the performance as possible. The interpretation of the humour leaves an opportunity to make this song personal and unique for the choir. The line ‘my bones may creek’, ‘I fall asleep’ (bar 11-12), the ‘soft shoe shuffle in order to keep fit’ (bar 15-16) and bar 18 are just asking for some action and the facial expressions could make this song memorable as much as fun to perform. ‘Sixty is a number that anyone can be’ – for the younger members of the choir (or by personal choice) the last alto bar cold be change to ‘Not ME’ and different voices can use that line.
