David gets to see the major events of his life with the help of his guardian angel, Gabrielle. This manner of storytelling combines elements of It’s a Wonderful Life, A Christmas Carol, and the old TV show This Is Your Life. Each event in David’s life is told through a song. It was originally written as a VBS (Vacation Bible School) musical. Although everyone in Israel is singing his praises, David questions the purpose of his life. Gabrielle shows him that everyone’s life is important, and that the good things that we do are like seeds planted along the way, which may not sprout and grow until much later. After reviewing his past, David is given a glimpse of the future, and realizes that he is one of many who are preparing for the coming of Jesus Christ. The musical is based on the stories from the Bible, mainly from 1 and 2 Samuel, but also including a Psalm and a geneaology listing from Matthew. David throws in a couple of bad puns as he tries to understand what Gabrielle is trying to tell him. The accompaniment is written for piano, but is appropriate for a praise team or a small dance band. The styles are quite varied, including cha-cha, pop, bossa nova, ballad, dirge, blues, jazz, and waltz. The piano accompaniment could be supplemented by percussion instruments (tambourine, maracas, woodblock, cowbell, etc.), as well as guitar, saxophone, and drums. The songs are at an Easy Intermediate level. The only stage requirements are a small balcony or elevated level with a railing or fence, and a floor area for the chorus. The musical consists of 10 scenes, but the two narrator characters remain on the balcony, and the floor area only needs to be changed in case the chorus members use different costumes and/or props for the different scenes. Published by Erik Cole (A0.996129). This is a transcription of the complete Pictures at an Exhibition for double reed choir. It is all in the original keys and based on the well-known Ravel orchestration, which is quite difficult. As a result, this arrangement is even more challenging. It is designed with at least 2 players per part in mind, and all of the oboe and bassoon parts are divisi throughout. The attached MP3 recordings are multi-track recordings of me playing all the parts. This was, by far, the most daunting recording I have put together for any of my arrangements, and I apologize for any minor imperfections in timing or pitch. In many places, this really stretched the limits of what I am capable of on bassoon. Both of these movements are fairly short and unlikely to be performed unless the entire piece is being performed, so I bundled them together. Con Mortuis functions as the final Promenade for the whole piece, and features high tremolos and the harp, which made for some transcription challenges. The first oboe part is quite difficult, and the high octave can be omitted if necessary.

One of the most vivid and cherished memories I have while growing up is of Sunday mornings, going to church, sitting in the same pew each week with my grandmother, hearing and singing the beautiful hymns of our faith, and then returning home to the aroma of beef slowly roasting in the oven. My father directed the church choir, my mother and older brothers sang in the choir, so the wonderful music of our faith was instilled in me from an early age. This medley, and others in the series, are arrangements of many of my favorite hymns from those early years, many of which have been lost in more recent editions. For this series, I have elected to use the older texts as that is the way they were first written and the way I first learned them. There is a reverence and beauty in the language enriching the vocal/choral tone which, I believe, is lost in contemporary, conversational, or politically correct syntax. I shudder to think of the day when a penitential phrase such as Hear thou my prayer, O Lord is rendered as Hey, God-dude, listen up - I'm talkin' atcha! I have also opted not to include the many wonderful hymns and carols which are associated with the major festivals of Christmas and Easter as those are commonly found in other collections. A caveat: I have no delusions, and I offer no pretenses, that these settings are great art. They are simply expressions of faith which I hope may bring a small measure of joy to other church musicians. The general concept of each medley is to present the hymn, often in its original chorale form, and then vary its harmony or texture. The hymns in this set include This Is My Father's World, I Love to Tell the Story, and Faith of Our Fathers.

I end with a triumphant portion of He Lives, ending with the Easter Song again. This is a powerful, dramatic, fun, interesting arrangement for advanced piano soloists that is just right for Easter Sunday offertory, special solo, prelude, or postlude. Time signatures used are 4/4, 3/4 in 3, 3/4 in 1, and 2/4, with several tempo changes, arpeggions, two octave gliss into Joy To The World.If you want to celebrate on Easter Sunday, take a look at this piece. This tune doesn't match the profundity and appeal of Bach's chorus, but the two 16-bar themes of St. Matthew Blue contain some of my favorite harmonic ideas from Bach’s work. Easy Sailing for Piano was a composition I wrote a few months into the corona-virus pandemic. My dad talked to me about writing piano music like this and almost immediately the idea for this composition popped into my head. I've created maybe over twenty compositions so far in my life, and this was the first one where I knew exactly how it was going to sound from the moment I got the idea. With all the other pieces, I started out with a small idea and grew from there. But as I said, with Easy Sailing for Piano, I knew exactly how the piece would go. Well... There is one thing that's different. Originally, I wanted Easy Sailing for Piano to be a lot longer. The idea was to increase in difficulty the further into the music you went. The problem with that idea was that I also wanted this to be an easy song to learn. It was clear that if I continued the composition, I was going to make it unsuitable for beginners to play. The parts that survived sound really good though. Easy Sailing for Piano should be pleasant to listen to and play. Easy Sailing for Piano is technically a theme and variations. If you don't know, a theme and variations is a musical form. It starts with a melody that establishes the mood of the composition, and the variations basically play around with that theme. Now this piece only has the theme and the first variation. I'm pretty sure you need more than one variation for it to officially be a theme and variations. But, I don't think that matters too much since it's for beginners and not advanced students. In the future, I might write a sequal to this composition. I think I might call it Easy Sailing for Piano 2, or something along those lines. It will have a theme that's similar to this video's, but it will be much, much longer. If you purchase the sheet music for Easy Sailing for Piano, I hope you enjoy it! This is supposed to be a pleasant song to listen to and perform.

The Bishop's Dance: a curious and comical piece in 11 time (3, 3, 3, 2). It comes from the legend of Robin Hood, in which Robin meets the bishop of Hereford, who had hoped to get the better of him, but Robin prevails and forces him to dance. The clumsy attempts of the ungainly Bishop to obey Robin's commands cause great merriment among the merry men To quote our vicar, Rev Barbara, after the recital For me music paints a picture, and, for that, I have got this picture of someone going for a stroll in their village and then they came across a very old cat wandering down the street imaging it could catch birds but never catching them. And then it would lie down for a sleep and dream of the days when it was a kitten.... It was a very reflective programme and turns our mind about What for the Autumn, what do we need to do next.. it really did fit in with the mood of the year, as we turn towards building up the programme for next year... So thank you, it gave us time to reflect in a very beautiful manner....
