This 3-movement brass quintet is program music, in that it is written in the style usually used to depict the American West, and frequently has the instruments taking on the speaking roles of cowboys or other western characters.  The first movement has a group of cowboys sitting around a campfire telling tall tales (at least this is what I had in mind).  In the second movement ranchers (or farmers) are waiting desperately for rain, which comes only briefly.  The third movement involves rival families, a surprise wedding, and a square dance.  Silly, maybe, but it helped me write the music, which is fun to play.  Suitable for advanced intermediate and professional quintets.  Duration: 11 minutes, 11 seconds.

I thought that was the sweetest thing and the rest is history!We hoped to give this piece its world premiere at some point in 2018 or 2019, with Jane herself playing the bassoon and myself on clarinet. However, the first major hurdle was Jane having an operation on each hand to cure her Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, and the second big hurdle was Covid-19! Due to life’s normal pressures, the work still awaits its long awaited for premiere.It has three movements, fast, slow, fast, and a total duration of approximately 15 minutes.I have also transcribed the bassoon part for bass clarinet so the piece can be played by either combination. It could even be played by two bass clarinets, which would be hilarious!I feel, as a player myself, that its main challenge is in sheer breathing and playing stamina as it certainly gets you working up a sweat by the end, but its comical, quirky character will hopefully make it great fun for players and audience alike.

The song was featured in the 1959 Broadway musical The Nervous Set, but was written in 1955 before this musical and was incorporated into it.

I have also included the tuba part as an E flat bass part. I have included optional oboe parts (which can be covered either by clarinets or flutes) and an optional bassoon part. The piece may feel a little brass heavy due to there being 4 horn parts and 4 trumpet parts; this is a reflection of the instrumentalists I had at the time of composing it. It is, as usual, thickly scored so that it will still work even if you don’t have a full compliment of players. The Double bass part can be played on a bass guitar.PERFORMANCE AND PHOTOCOPYING I freely give my permission to make as many copies of parts etc. as needed and would be delighted to have any of my music performed (there is no charge) but please tell me how it went!

Some actors in the cast played some instrument in a beginner way, so I wrote a simple track inspired by ancient Greek music so that everyone could act and play the soundtrack with me live. In the instrumental formation we have guitar, flute, clarinet, cello and drums. This is piece 3 of 6 that integrates the soundtrack. The writing of the drums must be followed rhythmically as it is written, however the pitches of the notes can vary. The most important thing is that the drums are played according to the relative height (High, medium and low). The songs are excellent for a group of beginning students to play together and practice chamber music, being a repertoire of easy execution and very impressive sonority. Good studies!
